Blimey, I've never seen that happen before!

Can you get a detailed (macro) photo of the broken end looking straight at it?

I've seen it happen once before to a friend of mine over at the 'Ring (a former member on here "Bonzai").

Never did understand exactly how it happened, but the only thing of note I could think of was that the gearbox bolts had come out a while back and the gearbox had completely separated from the engine block, and that maybe that had caused fatiguing of the input shaft - although logically, the clutch should have suffered as well and that was fine once the bolts had been refitted.

Talking someone through how to swap a gearbox when they've never done it before and what cars they could source one from that's liable to be in a German scrapyard was "challenging", but credit to him he did it and drove the car back home under its own steam :)

On the bright side though, you've now got a brilliant clutch alignment tool :D

I had to replace mine because the cas hole on the original box wasn't bored out enough to fit the sensor in and its screw hole wasn't even drilled out and it was a perfect box.

My replacement loves to chew cogs going into 1st and 2nd even when stood still unless i blip the throttle before i attempt it

Its bloody annoying making people think i cant drive it properly.

Is it possible to repair/replace the synchros? or would it just be easier to swap over all the guts from my original box?

I've got two ME5T turbo boxes from my 605 cars would anything from these boxes fit in the 205 box?

Depends how far you want to go, Syncros are not just the hub really, the teeth of both them & the gears when new have a nice point to them (So to speak) when worn this becomes blunt and even with a new hub the gear will have worn teeth which is a cause of bulking when changing gear quickly

Yes any specialist can do it, expect a huge bill as even a single gear new is over £100.00 so I would hate to think how much a new shaft was,

the M series of box's is just that, nothing like the BE box's

Drill out the hole and drill and tap the screw hole, much easier than stripping and rebuilding.

what other options of boxes do I have, to replace a be1 without loads of work ???

Depends what you call "a load of work"

BE3 conversion is easy enough - just a clutch pedal and cable swap if you use a 205/309 sourced BE3 gearbox (or a 306/Xsara etc one that's been converted to fit).

Later model gearboxes require the selector arm to be changed (not too difficult) and gearboxes with a pull style clutch either need swapping back to a 205/309 style push clutch, or adapting the 205 to use the pull type arm (and fitting a matching clutch).
