Change The Speedo Cable To An Electronic Unit?

Recommended Posts

shawsburypug

Hi,

As most of the people on here know more about these cars. Is there any way i can change the cable to a electronic system?

Many thanks

Certainly possible, there's a standard electronic speedo drive from later models that fits, and you could modify a speedo head from a later model also to fit in the 205 cluster no doubt.

but why?

Ben

Intresting post I also would like to know if this is possible but I think the original speedometer clock would not work..So unless there is a way to retain the original speedometer clock.Sounds easy to do in princible but at a cost of losing our original clock.

Off the top of your head, do you know of any clusters with an electronic speedo/odometer that are "modular" in construction, in the same way as most of the earlier clusters with cable driven speedos are? The late clusters seem to be one piece items with everything on a single PCB, that would make the job considerably more difficult than something with a standalone speedo unit.

It's something I've pondered doing before, but never got around to looking at seriously.

Yes, phase1 306, any 106, phase1 saxo and cars of similar era, possibly certain D8 406's.

Calibration of the smaller cars will likely be closer to what is needed for a 205 wheel size.

It wouldn't be too complicated to drive a motor on the back of the original speedo controlled by an arduino or something fed with a signal from a 306 style speedo sender.

Aren't Phase 1 306's and 106's still cable driven? The later electronic 306 clusters aren't modular unlike the Phase 1's.

I'll have a look at a Saxo and early 406.

Wouldn't calibration be effectively down to the cogs used in the speedo drive? The challenge as much as anything is redoing a facia, as the position of 0 and 140 is considerably different on a 205 speedo to a typical electronic speedo, and just sticking in the whole donor speedo and facia would look completely out of place.

I thought similar, but figured that it would be nice to have a completely digital setup, getting rid of the complexity of having the additional DAC stage, not having the potentially noisy motor, and doing away with the increasingly tired 205 speedo/odometer units.

a post 96 phase1 has the electronically driven separate units from what I can figure out, before the phase2 with the complete units, phase2 106's and early 1 plug saxo's are electric and separate units.

(looking at the diagrams on servicebox!)

there's a bit of maths to consider, and some testing to do I think!

for example, 306 with a 195 55 15 has a 19/22 speedo drive (1.15) to a circumference of 1870.8mm

205 with 185 55 15, 17/22 (1.29) circumference of 1836.3mm.

Later Citroen AXs had electronic speedos but I'm not sure if that was limited to the 110mph max versions or if it included GTIs or any other models that had the max 140mph speedo.

I am in the middle of completely refitting the in side of the car, As i want to get it up to a stage standard. so a small electricity display unit.

oh, the stage 205's I know use standard speedo's  granted I don't know many but still.

I have been speaking to a number of people and a lad from Basic Roamer explained to me a way in which this can be done by using the item in the link below.

I have got one of these and i will be putting it in soon.
