205 8V Lower Cambelt Cover

Recommended Posts

Tom Fenton

As far as I know you can no longer buy this item. This is a problem as with age the plastic warps, this means it then rubs on either the lower pulley or the cambelt, neither of which is good news, until it wears badly.

So here we have my prototype lower cover yes you guessed it a reproduction in steel.

This is my first one from the laser cutters, I am pleased with it as its a good fit first try.

As yet I've got to sort out a way of doing the "stand off" from the block, but I've a couple of ideas on this front already.

This first trial piece is mild steel just to check fit, but the proper ones will be yes you guessed it stainless steel and supplied with any non-standard fixings required to fit.

Coming soon!

looks very good indeed, something I had thought about but would have inevitably ended up being a shonky DIY effort, I haven't the skills or contacts you have!

Would a tab and a spacer be simpler instead of a welded on standoff?

Or is that bolt in close proximity to the axillary belt?

As you say the aux belt is tight against the cover, hence needing something that is flush. It would be complicated to do it with a folded piece as it needs a small radius in it to clear the bolt head, and also the standard cover has a small spigot that locates in the section that sits below it, so it seemed the simplest solution to make the standoff and counterbore it, as I could also replicate the spigot so that it fits properly to the section below. It also makes that area nice and rigid so it shouldn't move or flex about. I think the problem with the plastic cover is that it warps over time and heat cycles until it starts to rub on either the bottom pulley or cam belt.

Its straighforward enough if time consuming to make some of these bits, the most intricate part is measuring the original parts and then drawing them accurately in CAD to create the DXF file for the laser cutter. This has to be spot on as the minimum order quantity is usually 20 off, so if I get it wrong I've got 20 sets of profiles that are useless to anybody and a nice bill from the laser cutters. They then all have their folibles when it comes to manufacture, the airbox brackets require the folding to be accurate as if you get the first ones wrong it throws all the geometry for the rest of the bracket out. The same goes for the bumper corner bars and rear valance stays. The bumper spacers are simple enough now but only because I've made so many of them.

I'm working on a website for my parts which is not yet 100% complete but you can have a look at www.205gti-nfp.co.uk
