That's pretty cool. Were you not tempted to go back to the same location?

I guess going back to the original spot would have been the icing on the cake :) Maybe we could do so on its 25th anniversary! The original photo was taken in East Yorkshire, and I now live on the South Coast. We didn't really plan this in detail, we just happened to be out in the car together today so it was a nice bit of 'time warp' fun to try and re-create the pic. The cars are exactly the same spec, except the keen eyed might spot I had mud flaps fitted to my first GTi as an optional extra when new. Note also the 'computerised' style lettering of the original number plate - which was the lettering style at that time. I'm on the lookout for the original car G222 NAU, which still exists somewhere.

Is that Brighton?

Yes. Second pic was taken on Brighton seafront earlier today.

You can go back to the original spot when you buy G222 NAU back! ;)

Hi Roon – Many thanks for the comments. Will PM you.

When I bought my first 205 GTi, I was a young(ish) lad and took out a huge car loan to buy one brand new. I absolutely loved it. I sort of outgrew it after a few years and moved on to other things – but always nursed a soft spot for my lovely first GTi.

About four years ago, I saw the second car which was for sale locally to me. It immediately caught my eye because it was the same model, reg year, same colour and same spec as my first one. It was looking pretty sorry for itself at the time with the usual stuffing coming out of the driver’s seat bolster etc. I went to see it and he was calling ‘I’ve come home Dad’. So that was it. I’ve spent the last four years bringing it back to totally original spec – not that it was far off to be honest. Just the lights, which someone had changed all round from amber to clear lenses, a reflective rear tailgate panel (apols to those who like them) and sourcing and installing an original correct period cassette radio. There have also been a fair few mechanical bits to attend to but all is now in good order again.

Driving one again just puts a huge grin on your face. Given the age of the design it’s still impressively quick and they have an amazing chassis design for road holding. True there are plenty of even mid-range modern cars which will beat the pants off a 205 GTi, certainly at the higher top speed end, but not many will give the driver quite such a fun time zipping round a few tight and twisty country lanes. I believe its currently called 'Hooning' :D No power steering, no ABS, no air bags, no traction control malarkey, no DCS OK-YAR etc etc. A proper driver’s car and I love it.

It’s also great so many people point, wave and even come up and chat to you about the car when you are out and about.

So, if you are lucky enough to have a 205 GTi now, there is a good chance it will still have a place in your heart 25 years in the future

Great time warp pictures!

I have got similar for my laser green car.

This first pic from 1991 from when the 2nd previous owner first bought it, outside her house.

This second pic from 2011 when I took it back to show her, 12 years after she'd sold it on, she still lives in the same place, with her 206 GT that the 205 was part-ex'd against in 1999.
