Steering Rack Options

Recommended Posts

mrfirepro

Having stipped the car down and removed the rack I am left wondering what needs to be done with the steering rack.

There were no problems with it whilst driving the car but as it is off I don't want to miss the opportunity to refurb and tidy up, but dont really know what the options are.

What have others done with the steering racks whilst restoring the car?

Firstly you need to inspect it to ascertain its condition, then depending on your capabilities and access to tools/workshop facilities, replace the parts worn out or source a replacement unit.

I certainly wouldn't just go painting it

Thanks Welshpug, are there any guides on what to look for and how to do it?

At least replace, Boots, Arms and ends, Check for movement in the rack itself but you will need to remove the ram for this

Miles,

Is that quite straight forward?

This is the stripped down rack, it all seemed tight and in good order.

Apart from the O ring there does not seem to be any parts that would need replacing.

Would like to re-plate the ram, does anyone know if it comes apart as it's not apparent, also does the RAM retaining ring/bolt (made up name i know :P ) come away from the serrated steering rod (another made up name  , I hope you know the parts I mean).

I have also taken the spindle from the hydraulic drive unit
