S1 106 Rallye - Yay Or Nay?

Well, it's much less of a car (in any sense) than 205 GTI (IMHO), but I've always absolutely loved them! :wub:

 

Perhaps not as iconic as the 205 Rallye it succeeds (in a way), but still a rather interesting... toy.

 

BUT - what are they like to drive in their standard form?

 

Please share your views and experiences :).

They're good! Engine makes a good noise above 5500rpm! Surprisingly quick for a 1300 as well

That's a good point about the pedal positions, my first car was an AX so I was already used to that.

 

I think you'd ruin one with an extra 8 valves though, just buy a 106 GTI or Saxo VTS if that's what you want surely?

True but the phase 1s look much more manly//cool plus half door cards etc. s*it 'boat tiller' racks on them though like non pas 205s

 

A 16v conversion is easily reversed so its not as if you're destroying a rare car. 16v makes them actually quick rather than just feeling nippy.

adding more valves is adding 20 bhp but also 25 kilos, and a very different feel to it.

That's an interesting point about the steering ratio, it was a long time ago when I drove a Rallye and I was used to 205 manual racks at the time. Now I'm used to Xsara VTS racks normal 205s feel like tractors so I guess a Rallye would too.

I have no need for it, nowhere to put it and I shouldn't really be spending any more money on cars either! :wacko:

 

But they are ultra-rare here, possibly just one or two in the country left and this one appears to be in great condition.

I'm slightly worried about the pedal position, as my feet are on the large side.

That's odd - I've also always considered S2 as a completely different car and not a patch on the original one. Plus a stupid engine.

 

What's the steering like in terms of heaviness? Shouldn't it be lighter than non-PAS 205?

It would be if Peugeot had made a factory 205 Mi16 with running gear more suited to the engine that had sold in much larger quantities than the 8v.

 

Technically I imagine it is a much easier swap, no bulkhead or rad clearance issues.

S2s rallyes were a bit of a cop out, not as bad as the 306 rallyes but pretty lame especially when compared to the s1 106. And they're certainly manly looking when you sit them next to an s2 with they're girly lights and arches.

Steerings light but very slow, ruins them in my opinion.

 

A good 16v with a decent exhaust manifold and filter (sorry to sound like a max power fan) is more than 20bhp up on the standard 1300 IMO

European S2's in certain countries got 16v as std.

 

how large are your feet? I'm size 11, my brother size 13, IIRC Goliath is even larger.

 

we all had AX's or 106's as first cars, you learn to deal with it.

I remember my first ever ride in a S1 Rallye, it was my mate's stage rally car and he'd asked me to co-drive on a single-venue tarmac rally at Caerwent in South Wales. I was used to sitting next to another friend in his ~150hp Mk1 Escort so didn't think my skills as a co-driver would be too taxed. I've never been so wrong; firstly I just couldn't believe how fast that little 1.3 was, and secondly (and probably most importantly) I was even more amazed how handy my mate was. The gearbox exploded after about two miles of the first stage, but we'd already caught and passed the 2 litre Mk2 Escort that had started 30 seconds before us.

 

A year or so later I bought the Rallye and used it for tarmac and road rallies for a couple of years before I stupidly sold it. There's a couple of on-board vids on YouTube...

By that time it had a Gripper LSD and a slightly lower than standard FD ratio, but it was surprisingly quick for a ~120k mile car with a standard engine. We'd generally be 2nd or 3rd in the <1400cc class, only beaten by properly modified stuff.

 

I'm 6'7" and have size 13 feet, I didn't ever really find the pedal box a problem though the bucket seat and non-standard seating position might have helped I suppose.

 

I always much prefered driving the 205, the handling just never seemed as good to me, and the long-winded steering was a pain in the slower corners (in the faster corners it just steered on the throttle). But the engine was epic, it just wanted to rev and rev, I loved that.

 

Buy one.

I wear 10s but that's irrelevant as it's the positioning I didnt like. I ran a 1600 xsi for ages, I got used to it but still never liked it.

11 to 11 and a half. What's exactly the issue with pedals? And more importantly, how are they positioned relative to the steering wheel?

 

P.S. My first car was a 205 (GTI) :lol:.

The steering wheel and seat are where you want them but the pedals are offset towards the centre of the car due to intrusion from the wheel arch. Thinking about it I wouldn't be surprised if it's a right hand drive issue so it might not be a problem for you.

The shell is supposed to be symmetrical, isn't it, but then again - who knows.

 

I'm tempted to get see the car, if only for the sake of it, but it's a bit of a trek @ 300 miles for a round-trip.

The pedal problem I found wasn't the offset of the pedals - I can deal with that just fine - but how physically close they were together.

 

If you use the pedals with the balls of your feet rather than your toes, then forget it as you'll be repeatedly pressing two pedals at once if you've large/wide feet. I'm size 11 and just cannot drive 106/Saxo's comfortably with my shoes on

 

Shame, because S1 Rallyes are brilliant frankly and I'd have otherwise had one in a flash - not massively quick, but very rewarding.
