Deciding if I should heatwrap my manifold on my gti6 engined 205 as I'v heard bad things about tubular manifolds cracking when heatwrapped anyone had any experience in this area?

It's not just the manifold itself cracking/degrading due to the thermal stress and rusting off underneath the wrap layer (moisture issue) , the heat also ends up inside the engine as well - exhaust ports , valves , seats , piston and can cause cracking and detonations .. the stuff generally adds heat over entire head surface reducing inlet charge density as well .

Personally I'm against the use of this stuff for road car , turbocharged cars especially !

While stainless steel would stand up to it better, the effects of wrapping a mild steel exhaust can be pretty horrid...

Here's a pic stolen from another thread.. (it's probably a low budget manifold but you get the idea)

I'd stay well away from it to be honest.

Given the worryingly close proximity of various items in the engine bay to the GTi-6 exhaust manifold, I chose to wrap mine to reduce the danger of heat damage to surrounding parts (fuel lines, coolant hoses, bulkhead bungs, speedo cable etc) which was far more of a concern for me than the potential for slightly reducing the life span of the manifold (which realistically is still likely to outlast the engine, and if not, is cheap enough to be pretty much consumable)

Strange. My original reply to this topic vanished.

You should get them ceramic coated.

There was a problem with a forum software update and everything after about 10:20 PM UK time yesterday was lost.

Cheers for the advice, I think I'll maybe make up a heat shield rather than heat wrapping as I'm not wanting to have big maintainance bills on my hands
