Track Car Options - Clio 172 V 205 Gti

I'd leave the 205 standard whatever you do, as people have pointed out already there's alot of ready converted cars out there going for peanuts.

However, if he mods the 205 it means that there is one less standard unmodded example on the road and the values of ours will eventually increase due to the low numbers now left.

Seriously though, the Clio 172/182 is plentiful and if you trash it, it's easier to replace unlike the 205.

As said of sell both buy a track ready 205 and have money in the bank. That way a nice original 205 hasn't been 'ruined' and all the hardwork is done and you can have fun right away.

My 6 powered 205 is just awesome compared to my friends 182 cup it's in another league and he agrees and is now on the hunt for one.

You've got both cars at the moment but you haven't mentioned which you prefer driving?

If you prefer the Clio, or there's not much between them, then the Clio has to be the sensible option for all of the reasons mentioned, less to do, cheaper parts etc.

If you prefer driving the 205 then that's a different story.

The Clio now is where the 205 was maybe 10 years ago. Cheap plentiful and with performance to match its contemporaries.

The 205 has moved on from being the fastest thing you could buy for about £1000 onto increasingly a collectors car.

I'd personality keep the 205 and track the Renault

Thank you for everyone's replies and responses but I think I am going to sell the Pug and stick with the Clio.

Cheers everyone

I've recently spotted quite a few road rally prepared clios, they would be ideal for you, already got a cage and uprated bits, but cheaper than a logbooked stage car.

Probably the best thing to do. Sell the Pug to someone who will take good care of it and ruin the Clio as they are ten a penny.

Either that or sell both and buy something more track dedicated. I hear GT3s are good.

I think you've gone down the right path selling the 205 as 172's are going for very little atm so your going to get enough from the 205 to make the Clio a weapon, even though I prefer 205's I'm think it was the smarter option

you could consider selling up both and buying something cheap and RWD. Toyota MR2 supercharged? I've used an MX5 on a slalom day and it was great fun. Saying that we did revert to the Mi16 205 to smash as many of the top times as we could as the airfield was damp (and the 205 has 90bhp more) The MX5 gives a bigger thrill than the clio out the box despite being slower and the gearbox is sublime.

in my opinion i would keep the 205 original, sell the clio and if it was me by a 106 gti or saxo vts, you can get them really really cheap, i got my 106 for £400, they are pretty quick out the box with a few breathing mods like manifold and exhaust see 150 bhp and are really light,

mine is pretty standard apart from manifold and exhaust and i can pull on 182's and 197's with ease, ive been to a couple of track days at lyyden hill in it, awesome fun for such a cheap car, surprised alot of bigger more powerful cars as i could out break and take corners faster,

had a play with a 350bhp cossie powered 4wd fiesta that couldn't loose me off his tale (obviously on track, on the road it would eat me for breakfast)

Parts are plentyful and dirt cheap if you crash it, ive had mine for 3 years now and touch wood its never broken down, only problems is the same as 205s is the rear axles.

there the best cars for handling like the 205 as you have fully independent suspension all the way around, plus they have controllable lift of over steer.

Have a think, if you are serious about track day'ing a car, are the parts easy to get hold off, is it easy to modify, does it suit your needs, is the shell clean enough no rust or rot.

I know what you mean, and i've looked at a few other ideas. I had a VTR years ago and that was fantastic bit of kit, so it has gone through my head, but the Clio we've owned for nearly 7 years, rot and rust free, paint and interior are mint and we know all the service history. So I think to get me into track days comfortably and reliably I am going to aim at the Clio and run that for a bit......then maybe upgrade down the caterham/westfield type of route in a few years time once I've got my confidence up a bit.

Thank you everyone for your replies and advice, but I am going to sell the pug and track the Clio.

I am slowly building up my posts on here so I can start a car for sale topic soon as the pug is just sitting in the garage.

Cheers

Dave

I would use the Clio as is, 100% stock to begin with, you'll have a right laugh :D very capable machines, same front calipers as a gti6 as it happens, but they're nigh on 200 kilos lighter.

I see a handful of these in rough Group N spec rallying in Belgium and they run stock calipers with uprated rally pads, they stand up to it well.

Not sure where best to say this but I've just posted the car on pugs4sale.co.uk site, as I saw it on the front page was now up and running. Fingers crossed.

Just had a look at your ad

Are you sure it has a carburettor ;)

On a serious note - I'd take your 'full' address off there sharpish or you'll have the pikeys round

Thought someone might pick up on that bit about the carb.....it's not quite a V8 muscle car.

I think google adds it automatically, but I will see if I can edit it out.

Cheers

I had a 172 track toy and it was good fun on track. They dont handle too bad either but a mate had a nice 205 gti6 and I did struggle to keep up.

The car is still for sale (466 views so it can't be too bad) on the classified section on this forum plus its on pistonheads (http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/peugeot/205/peugeot-205-gti-------------------1991/1858621?utm_expid=73689293-28.GwaTIa0tTx6mQ1ehYJDijg.0&utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pistonheads.com%2Fclassifieds%2Fused-cars%2Fpeugeot%2F205 )

Looking at the other Gti's on Pistonheads mine is quite cheap.....what do you guys think?

Best thing you can possibly do in terms of gaining interest and value is to put a fresh MOT on the car.

If I were a perspective buyer, the fact that it's only got 2 weeks ticket left (presumably none now since the advert is 2 weeks old) would instantly put me off I'm afraid.

Time of year and the cosmetic/rust issues won't help either of course, but the price sounds reasonable.

Thank you for the comment, think that might be a good idea. I could adjust the advert and say I will put a fresh MOT on it for the new owner.

The garage is kept in a warm garage all the time, so the rust won't be getting any worse I guess.

Sell both and buy my car. Have a look in the for sale section. Building a track car is not cheap
