Track Car Options - Clio 172 V 205 Gti

Hello all great to see the forum going from strength to strength.

I just pop in from time to time and will have a 205 again I'm sure,I will be looking for a mint standard car when I do, I miss my old 205 which I used to sprint hill climb.

I'd keep the 205 standard if the bodywork is in good enough condition but I'm a traditionalist.

I currently have a 172Cup and use it to compete in the same class as the 205.

Cup for the track and 205 as the daily both capable cars as you know, for me the Cup is the new 205, I run a standard engine + gripper diff and lower FD along with Bilstein B14 suspension and the car is just a smidge slower than my old 205 with a Longman 8valve on 45's with full Group N Bilsteins and Quaife diff in a 1.6 box.

Two Clios ran in my class this year. They give me a hard time. Of the quicker of the two, after three rounds, there was just 0.05secs between our best lap times. It has a cage, gripper, AST suspension, big brakes and some mild cams. It eventually blew up and the other eventually beat me in the final round to win the series. They handle.

thing i love about the Clio's is that you can now pick up a very usable one to use as a weekend track toy for 1200-1500quids!!!!Seriously cheap french thrills!!!.....and with no nasty itching or rashes afterwards!!!

Do you want to buy one Tony? My 172 Cup becomes surplus at the end of this month.

Had it 5 years and it's at the stage where it needs another belt. That comes at the time when it needs tax and an MOT. The paintwork is poor on it so I would need to spend more than the car is worth to get it up together unfortunately. I intend to start breaking it in February if it doesn't go whole. It is probably ideal for someone unconcerned with aesthetics wanting to build a track car. I would - but would there be point me owning the 205 aswell - that's the problem. I'll have another, they are cracking little cars for the money.

The 205 was sorned yesterday so that won't become a daily - can't start using it more for work than I've ever used it in my ownership for pleasure can I? I'd dread to know what it owes me per mile.

Chipstick - I've decided to swap to a Clio, is it presentable?

It's a 52 plate in the Mondial blue on 91k miles. It's presentable enough but the bonnet needs painting/changing as it's gone cloudy from where it was painted about 6 years ago but the prep obviously wasn't the best. Would need to be painted or changed for one from a breaker. It's been keyed. The drivers side is trough the clear coat so has a dull line down the side rather than in your face white to primer so it could be worse but still obviously not ideal. I've a touch up pot to run down it but to be fair I didn't see the point in admitting to the person responsible that I'd been bothered by it so left it.

It's lowered on coilovers with Team Dynamic Pro Race 1 alloys so isn't going to be to everyone's taste.
