Peugeot 306 Diseasal Advice

Recommended Posts

I'm after some buying advice on 306 diesels.

Basically looking for something half-decent for the school run, as I'm seriously considering spunking cash on an M3 now. It's a 30mile round trip (twice a day so 60miles) and includes M4 & A4. My 1.4 306 isn't really up to it anymore and need something else. Golfs and BMW 320ds seem to hold their price even for intersteller mileage but there are a couple of 306s on AT. A '98 90k 306 Series 2 DTurbo for £500 with fresh MOT on, or a series 3 2000 90bhp HDi for a grand.

The car ideally needs decent mpg (50 would be nice) but I had an 307 90hp HDi some years, and it was slow and never achieved 50mpg (more high 30's). Is it realistic to expect 50mpg from a 306 DT or HDi, or am I better of shelling out £1800 on a 90k Gold 1.9TDi which will?

306 HDi should do 50 easily, the 307 is a few hundred kilos heavier, so struggles with the 90 engine.

driven carefully the old XUD will do 50 as well, but not as easily as the more efficient HDI.

£2k will get you a very tidy DTurbo HDI, where I doubt 2k will get you much in the way of golfness,

and I don't like them, hard seats and wallowy suspension, the only car I've felt car sick in for a long time was a mk4 gold TDI! they have a liking for turbos and parts are more expensive.

Why not consider a xsara hdi :)

For ultimate economy, id be looking at a DT but finding a nice tidy one these days is hard! A HDi will do slightly less MPG than a DT but will be much more refined and seeing as they made them up to 2002 (albeit in estate form), you should pick up a tidy one.

Other than the basic 306 issues (some dodgy wiring, knocking front suspension components, airbag lights etc), all they really suffer from is Low pressure pumps packing up and fuel pressure sensors giving up.

With a good quality map, you will get not only better power but also better MPG.

quite the opposite in my experience, the HDI is much more efficient.

Ive got a 2001 306 HDI Meridian. So has the nicer seats etc. I paid 800 for it. Got myself a tuning box from rover ron. So it runs 115/120bhp as apposed to the dead 90bhp for about £100 I do 550/700 miles depending on the way i drive on £78 of diesel. As for problems with them it literally is the French electrics. Most annoying being the speedo being intermittent. The Airbag light. And the occasional coolant low light. Even tho its not.

And what harni said i think is wrong the HDI gets better fuel economy then the DT

indeed, if a 1.5 ton C5 can crack 53 mpg, I'm sure the significantly lighter 306 will do 50 just fine :)

Not saying they are poor on fuel by any means at all but my personal experience is the DT is slightly better.

From my own experience, my old 306 1.9 DTurbo used to get 43-45mpg, whereas my 306 HDi gets around 49-51mpg (both in day to day use)

Unless you want to run on veg oil or you're wanting to do extensive tuning, I'd get an HDi every time out of the two.

I'd be careful of a1.9TD around the era you're talking, as I think it was engines made around then that have a habit of throwing rods - it was only a specific engine code that did it, and I would imagine that most that were going to do it probably will have already done so, but worth keeping in mind.

Oh, and if you can find a late HDi (2001-2002) then they're a fair bit cheaper on tax as well, for what that's worth in the grand scheme of things

My 306 just missed out on that tax band. I cried when I found out.

Put a deposit on one today, collect Monday hopefully.

A 2000 plate, 90hp HDi Meridian in wine red sort of colour up for £1k. Took a gamble on the rear beam as the drivers side is definately cambering so hopefully the tube isn't buggered. It still moves up and down freely enough so fingers crossed. I got a few quid knocked off (basically what a decent 2nd hand beam would cost) the asking price. Needs a rear wiper arm, polish and a service, but should be good to go after that. Engine looks immaculate!

So....how do I get to the 110hp on this then? Intercooler?

I used a tuning box from a guy who used to be known as rover ron. His tuning boxes seem to be the best and not the cheap rubbish. Im running a decat straight through and a nice cone air filter EGR delete. Got it Dyno'd at 128bhp. No intercooler yet as im too lazy these days but remap with a Intercooler and same mods as me. ur looking around 140/150bhp.

Probably Diablo Red by the sounds of it.

Have a look in the DW10 section on 306OC. There is a few people on there who will have maps they might be able to send you :)

Picked it up today. Drove back from Farnham absolutely fine. Don't know if it's because I've been driving a slow car of late, but it rattles along OK, certainly on a par with the Seat Leon 1.6 diesel I'm bumbling about in right now. Clutch is a tad tight but nothing else cropped up from the drive back. Just need to sort the beam (bearings gone) and the cracked front bumper, missing a fog light too. Even had 3/4 tank full of diesel too. Happy days :D
