Look forward to it. Is the above picture the car now? or how you want it to look at the end of the project?

Ok so back in September 2011 I needed a car to replace this;

DSCN2159-1.jpg

Due to the low mileage and the value, it became a bit of a burden as I couldn't use it as much as I would have liked.

I had always liked the 205 GTI but I wanted something a bit different and a car in which I could modify without affecting its value.

So after looking around I found a 52,000 mile, 2 owner, full PSH 205 1.1 XL. Sadly this is the only picture I have before I started to mod it;

Got some valences;

Then refurbished some Speedline SL201's;

Had some fun;

Then I made contact with Miles at Pug Racing;

More detailed photos will be on their way.

Very nice.

About 15 years ago some of us on this forum were making some predictions that were seen as very unlikely. I remember when everyone was ditching their orange indicators so they could modernise their 205 with phase two lights, a few of us said there would be a time when people actually wanted orange indicators and we were laughed at, that time came a while ago. I also remember people reshelling their GTIs due to the tiniest cosmetic imperfections, a small minority warned that one day we would run out of good shells and people would make 205s with specs exceeding GTIs using base model shells as was already the norm for mk1/mk2 Escorts and nobody believed us. I know there have been a lot of high spec non GTIs on here over the years but this feels like a turning point for some reason, I'm not sure why... :lol:

I like calling all 205 XS because it makes people cry.

Call it what you like, as it's a bit of everything. XL base, 1.6 GTI bits, 1.9 GTI bits, XS bits, 306 GTI-6 bits, there is even a part from Skoda and a Mercedes.

The closest thing it resembled is a XS and I like the 80's wing decal so I went with that.

Hope that clears up any confusion.

Very nice, so what front subframe is it running? If gti how did you mount it to the chassis rails, did it bolt straight up to the bushes that base models have?. Also whats it down as on the insurance?

GTI subframe, it bolts straight up.

After insuring a 204bhp Mercedes from 19, the 2.0 205 is a fair bit cheaper. So yes, not being an idiotic chav, it's insured as you see it.

Yeah me being dumb there, never thought with the xu10 engine you wont Have the issues of putting a gti frame on a tu, what did you have to do v5 wise tax etc, I need to change the 309 if I ever finish it

Go on, say it - it was mostly me preaching this! :lol: And in fact, I mention it every so often to local 205 owners - the last time was just a few days ago as it happens.

As for modifying a base model 205 - if one goes custom with the engine, suspension, brakes and interior - what's then left from the GTI anyway? Arches and red carpet? Or perhaps the "spirit"?

Arguably, GTI may be a better starting point (although this is debatable) but many people still like a fact that their car is/was a proper GTI.

Regardless of this, OP has done a great job and built a cracking little car. Well done!
