Putting A 309 Gti Back To Standard From Gti6 Conversion

Recommended Posts

I have a 1992 309 gti which I converted to gti6 a while back, I have been thinking lately of putting it back to standard engine and gearbox etc, what do you think I should do I'm in two minds at the moment. Thinking original as there aren't many left now.

Makes it more saleable if your looking to sell if its otherwise a good genuine example I imagine.

If you still have the original block, then keep hold of this to retain the matching numbers, and keep it gti6 until you make your mind up?

I wouldn't hold out too much hope for it... it's a car that's never going to go down the same road as an old Escort or Mini etc, different era and unfortunately time hasn't stood still... you've got to wonder what the future holds in an increasingly over populated plant, the market is saturated with "classic cars" and although there are plenty buyers, times are getting harder for a lot of us... good jobs are more scarce, energy bills climbing higher, I want to believe like you that we will always have a country that is passionate about motors and we will but sooner or later we may have to face a future without the car as we know it... I think we've already had the good times...

You've got to wonder what's going to happen when a few billion Chinese suddenly decide thay can afford a motor car... don't think they'll be looking for old pugs though.

If it's a decent 309 then restore it to standard and put it away somewhere dry, for the future......... and sell me the GTi6 engine :)

Reality is that cars from the 90's are going to be the last generation of classics in my view. Later stuff will be written off by prices to fix/buy parts and the electrical items. I may be wrong. And can you imagine a time where a £450,000 AC cobra or even more expensive items are considered worthless. I know its a different league to these bit I can't imagine a time when they are, and I don't believe they will just be museum pieces. I think they will still allow limited licences to use them, and it will be another 20 years at Least. There be 40 year old cars by then.

Don't think you need to worry about it yet
