First Drive Impressions

Just had my first proper drive in my new '88 205 1.6 Gti after getting it checked over and am really pleased! Bought it on a whim ( I have a '90 Cti too which I may sell now ) and as it had been standing I gave it to my local classic-friendly garage to replace the cambelt and service / check it over for me. The little history I know of the car includes it being owned by another local garages apprentice mechanic who used it as a training tool for himself, the garage owner getting him to overhaul it in quiet times to learn things. Mechanically, it feels spot on, only mod from standard being a quick-shift gear linkage and it is surprisingly squeak and rattle free for a 25 year old French car! It seems much tauter and lighter than the Cti, and the engine seems a ferocious little bugger despite being supposedly standard. I normally get a bit bored with cars if they are not a hoot to drive ( my other two are a Yamaha R1 powered kit car and a 120bhp '71 Cooper S both of which I use for sprinting and hillclimbing ) but for some strange reason my first impression is I will keep this one too..... Only problem the garage said is that the distributor vacuum does not work, which I don't mind as it means it will drive even better when I get it sorted and tuned up. My house does look like an 80's Peugeot dealership at the mo outside as both the cars look identical in Graphite Grey, but hey I don't mind.

Sounds like it's a good one. I must drag mine out, it's been on the trickle charger since the last ph meet!

Yeah would not mind you looking over it for me at some point? Good idea to go to the pub :-)
