Dont you do the cambelt through the wheel arch?

 

And does taking the engine mount out not help too.

Its possible to do all the cambelt work with the engine mount left in place. A bit tricky feeding the belt through, but saves removing the bolts that secure the mount bracket to the head/block as they can be a cow to get out.

 

If you are struggling disconnect the top mount and lower the engine down on a jack, then you get a bit better access to the water pump and tensioner from under the wheelarch.

 

Certainly for the cambelt covers its a lot easier when you've done the job before and know where the bolts are hiding!

Well I have made some progress and I have now got the cam covers off and the alt belt out, however I tried to jam the ring gear on the flywheel using a chisel and screwdriver and when I gave the pulley bolt some welly they pinged out...

 

So to avoid any unwanted damage to the engine I have tapped up a friend for a favor and he is going to come over tonight with some big screw drivers and lock it for me whilst I undo the bolt.

 

This did give me time to clean the inlet manifold which was shocking on the inside and took a lot of prep to get it clean, then onto the exhaust manifold which kindly had heat tape on it which rubbed against my arms whilst removing the bolts and I now look like I have eczema!

 

I did also remove the oil breather and clean that but when I took the top/ bottom breather pipe off the engine it resembled feta cheese and fell to pieces in my hand so I need the big pipe which goes into the black oil breather which also has a secondary pipe coming out of it which goes into the rocker cover...

 

It looks like a one-off Peugeot only special and I can see me getting stung to replace it but I have no choice so if anyone knows where I can get a replacement from that would be great and in the mean time I will ring Peugeot so they can laugh at me and say "oh you can't get those any more!"

Sweet they are only £35 + VAT, my local Peugeot garage quoted me £71 + VAT for a genuine one!!!

 

It is only a bloody hose, why is it so much?!?

If I gave you £85 could you make me from scratch a breather hose that will last 20 years?

 

Maybe it isn't so expensive after all.

I take your point, it just seems like a bit of a cash cow because they know that the pipes will perish and fail because they sit there with old hot engine iol in them all day long, still at least the £85 genuine item justified (at least to me, maybe not the wife) the £105 + VAT full breather kit :D

I have replaced the water pump and cam belt tensioner and I have rebuilt the head, when I came to put the head back on last night all 9 (new) head bolts were finger tight all the way down to the top of the head except for one (number 8 in the picture below).

and so I took the bolt out, swapped it for another one and it was the same issue again. I then I removed the head (again) and put a screw driver into the hole and it was very apparent that there was something in there...

 

I have just about (given this was 11 last night in the rain) managed to get my head in there with a torch and I can see something metlallic in the thread at the bottom.

 

I have checked all of the old head bolts and they all measure the same so nothing has snapped off when I removed them and I can't shift whatever this is with a long screw driver.

 

I am at a total loss, the car is ready to be put back together (this is my main vehicle) and I can't seem to do anything with conventional tools.

 

I think my option are

 

1). By a new block (I really, really, really, really don't want to!)

 

2). Some how get a massive drill bit into the hole and drill out whatever is there and then use an old head bolt as a donor to recut the thread and remove the swarf

 

3). Possibly drop the sump off and gain access to the foreign object and then drill/re-tap from the bottom (maybe???)

 

I will be honest I am totally gutted, I was hoping to have the head torqued on last night and to just be re-fitting bit tonight and this problem seems to be delving into the world of machining and specialist tools that I don't have...

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Legend, I am so glad the gurus are here to help, I just hope I have not mashed the bottom of the tapped hole too much trying to get the metal out (which now turns out to be part of my block :blush:
