Base Level Dash Upgrade, Maybe Gti, Or Xs?

Recommended Posts

dt_

Hi all, have a base level dash, and to be honest its a bit knackered, the clocks are loose, and i quite fancy a rev counter. Just wondering how difficult it would be to wire in either an xs or gti dash pot with rev counter. I appreciate there will be gauges that don't work I.e oil temp, coolant temp etc, just bothered for the tacho.

What do you reckon? Or should I hold out for a rallye dash which iirc is a base level dash with a tiny rev counter where the base level analogue clock is?

Any help/replies appreciated, ta

No worries for the tacho , for making it work with the GTi clocks just use a signal from the coil negative terminal .. coolant temp. can also be sorted by pulling additional wiring from the senders , it's just the oil temp. and oil pressure which will first need senders fitted on the engine in order to make the gauges work .

Otherwise , fitting complete dash from GTi is pretty straightforward (if you plan on fitting complete assembly) .. not hard at all , unless yours is early Ph1 car , if so you'll need to do some rewiring/soldering to make it work with Ph 1.5/2 switches and change complete heater assembly - also not an hard job if you know how to read wiring diagram and have all the necessary parts (i made mine from early Ph1 dash to late Ph2 , regrettably now  , however it was in really messy state with loads of cracks and nowhere to find a spare dash segments for repairing)

Thanks Damir, mines a 1.6 auto, so can't really control revs at all am just curious to know how fast it's spinning. Quite a quick car tbh- much quicker than it looks with its base level bodywork and 13inch steels.

So am I best going for a gti clock? Or would an xs version be ok? To get the tacho running would I need to fit an extra wire to the coil? The car is a 1994 m reg if that clarifies anything

All the warning lamps, speedo etc will be plug and play?

Cheers again

To be honest i dunno what kind of dash wiring is there being a 1.6 automatic

Anyways , xs clocks might be better choice if you do not have oil press. and oil temp. senders on the engine (if it's an XU 1.6 engine it should have senders fitted .. at least the oil press. sender ... check up front of the engine near the alternator for the oil press. sender and at the back of the sump for oil temp. sender ..) , if you have all senders fitted i'd go straight for the gti clocks .

Wiring , yes .. you'll need to pull additional wires from the coil/senders to the clock gauges , some of the warning lamps will work but not all .

Easiest option is using xs/gti dash loom - simply unplug the present from the fuse box and plug in xs/gti loom and there will be no need for messing with the wiring , it'll be plug and play then .

Also , afterwards you'll need the top dash cowling from either a xs or gti to cover the clocks .

I swopped my rallye dials for some from an Xs and they're awesome..

Base models shouldn't have the gti clocks IMO.. Look wrong

Yeah Gibbo I hear that, the xs clocks have more of a base level feel but with the instrumentation I'm after. How did swapping them go? Worried that the speedo will be out, or is the cable the same but the gearing in the dash pot different?

Thanks for all the advice guys

I sold my Rallye gauges to some one on here, could have been you Calvin!?

As you have a 1.6 Auto XU engine I would advise to use some GTI clocks as you should be able to get all the parts and just plug and play.

For reference the plugs that go into back of the gauges vary from model to model. GTI gauges for instance are very different to XS, Rallye, TU engined cars etc, actually quite a different design behind too. If the new gauges you select have different plugs you'll need the loom that goes from the gauges to the fuse board area, this also include the clock, cig lighter, fog, hazard switches etc.

So maybe gti ones are the ones to have. I'm guessing I'd be better off getting some that are from a car as close to 94 as possible to ensure the best fit?

Any phase 2, (or most likely 1.5 as well) will bi fine. Do you have the dash that splits the warning lights into another level from the dials or is it all in one?

Yeah it's got two levels, so will need gti/xs dash cowling aswell

You could use a rev counter from a phase 2 GR model which would fit in the space where the analogue clock is presently. Someone did this to the 1986 205 automatic which I purchased recently.
