1.6 Gti Starting Problems?

Just got a 1.6 Gti, engine runs sweetly and 9 times out of 10 it fires up within 2 or 3 seconds. BUT when it doesn't it just spins and spins until maybe on the 10th attempt it will cough once the fire, again running sweetly. A local mechanic suggested from distant memory it could be something on the injection system not going "live" but it was a long time ago he worked on them. Any pointers?
