Just to document the work my car has had done in the last year or so.

Last year saw the major rusty bits tackled (sill and nsf inner wing) and a leather interior fitted along with a good clean of the carpet.

This year I had a GTI6 engine fitted by Dan Taylor, who did an absolutely fantastic job. This also included 309 bottom arms, new disks, pads, fluid and brake lines all round.

He also fitted a 16 row oil cooler, neatly in the radiator cowling

The whole GTI6 engine thing came about because he had a maniflow/magnex exhaust system that I joked I'd buy if he could stick a 6 engine on the end...

And I have just capped it all off with a full refurb of my Speedline alloys shod with Michelin PE2s.

All done for now. Next years plans include a suspension upgrade (24mm rear ARB, Stiffer front springs and better shock) and a Xsara VTS 'box with Quaife diff.

I am just enjoying a reliable, strong and shiny gti now.

Cheers,

Antony

Looks bloody lovely mate. In my opinion 205's struggle pulling off black unless flawless, safe to say yours is looking like its just rolled out the factory!

Thanks guys, but being honest the pictures flattet to deceive. Its graphite grey and far from flawless. It does shine up well though.

It looks lovely, I think I'd remove the "TOW" stickers personally as they are out of character with the rest of the car.

Tom, that's a fair point as it was bought as a track car but has got a bit too tidy for that now.

Looks great Antony

You should know however that there's no such thing as a "finished" 205 - they're mearly in a temporary state between being worked on

Opening a big can of worms here, but how do you find the GTi-6 compared to the Mi16? I've had both so I have my own opinions, but it's always good to hear what others who have actually owned/driven properly done examples of both think.

Good to hear that Dan Taylor is still around - not heard from him in a while. Pass on my regards when you next speak to him :)

Anthony, I agree and that's why I added the tag "for this year anyway".

I love the gti6 engine, but it is very different to the mi16. I like the clean idle and the torque and the linear way it builds up speed.

However, I do miss the shove at 5000rpm from the mi. That made it feel quite special, race-bred if you like.

I don't like the weight of the iron block 2 litre, that changes how the 205 feels profoundly. Although my biceps are coming along nicely...

Dan has moved back to West Sussex from Essex and started a new business. My mi conversion was his last job 3 years ago and this gti6 conversion was one of his first in the new place.

He does a cracking job Dan, although his time-keeping sucks, and as I work more in Crawley again, I'll be going to him for my suspension work next year.

Yes I'm sure its not black! I wash and polish the bl00dy thing every week, I should know... ;)

Just had the car on my local, trusty rolling road (HT Racing, Kent) and the results are;

Power: 164.5 bhp @ 5705rpm

Torque: 154.2 lbft @ 5474rpm

The figures seem good for a standard engine, especially the torque figure, however the AFR was flat at a value 1 for pretty much the entire rev range.

That should be ok for safety sake at high rpm, just, but I suspect a little more power can come if the mixture was richer.

Any idea why the AFR would be so constant?

It might be something isn't quite right there with the cam timing, or how they measured the RPM, as it should peak a fair bit higher, 6500 is the book figure, and it should have revved out past 7k.

cam timing out makes sense with the torque being a good chunk higher than most too, they may be advanced a bit, so you need to be careful.

it will be a good bit quicker than an Mi, they make 130 ish lbft and a touch less power, but sorting out the issue should bring in a bit more whizzbang feel to it.

Nice car there.

Do you have contact details for Dan's new business? Is he still going to be working on 205's?

Thanks

I would assume more likely the gearing is not correct on the dyno so it may well have actually been revving higher than the graph shows..

It might be something isn't quite right there with the cam timing, or how they measured the RPM, as it should peak a fair bit higher, 6500 is the book figure, and it should have revved out past 7k.

14PUG - PM'd.

I'm very pleased with how it drives and it feels just how that torque curve looks. It easily hits the limiter so can only assume there was something odd about the rollers.

Thing is I had the Alfa done the previous day and it read just fine all the way up to 7000rpm.
