Idle / Stall Whilst Engine Is Warming

Recommended Posts

Phil205

Hi,

My car idles absolutely fine once warmed up.

It just idles rubbish whilst warming up.

I have cleaned the idle screw and AFM with carb cleaner.

I am fairly sure the SAD is opening for a while when cold, though it may be closing prematurely ?

1) What is the most likely cause of the problem for poor idling, whilst the car is warming up ?

2) Has anyone ever tried putting a resistor is series with the SAD, to delay it closing ?

1, combination of everything, poor setup, worn components.

2, doubt it, its a very very simple device, it will be fully open when the engine is cold, slowly closing as engine temperature increases, aided by the 12v heater element inside it, it will still close even if unplugged (though maybe not fully)

Remove the throttle body and clean out all the drillings inside it until they are spotless. Ensure all the hoses to/from the SAD/inlet are free of gunge and not kinked, blocked or split. Also make sure there are no air leaks, in particular the bolt the holds the oil filler tower to the inlet manifold.

Then reinstall the throttle body and check the butterfly clearance, often this is far too small which does not help matters. If it hasn't been moved in a while sometimes the adjuster stop screw can be seized in place. After you have done this, next step is to reset the throttle switch.

The Haynes manual describes how to do all this, once it is all done the car should then behave itself.

Lots of people are quick to point the finger at the poor old SAD but in reality it is a very simple device and rarely gives any issues other than being gunged up and needing a good clean out.

" in particular the bolt the holds the oil filler tower to the inlet manifold."

Would anyone have an idea where this bolt is?

The only one i see is holding the throttle cable to the manifold, but i didn't look for too long

Or have a drawing from Servicebox, i tried looking myself, and no luck

further back from that, still on the side of the inlet manifold.

Silver would be as far as i would go Damir ;)

Did you ever see a small bit of oil collect at the bottom of the manifold where the hose connects BTW?

If really in the need for painting , only silver color ! painted induction parts have tendency of "holding the heat" , and thus heating up inducted air decreasing it's density ..

Oil , yes small amount of it down on the insides of the inlet manifold is normal :) .. however , if there's obvious bigger amount of oil inside that'll point out to the worn inlet valve steam seals/guides .
