Cam Belt

Recommended Posts

Phil205

Hi,

I had the cam belt and water pump changed in 2008 at 110k miles.

The car has now done 160k miles.

How often should the cam belt be changed ?

I'd be doing it now for peace of mind. Cannot remember what the mileage interval is, but 5 years in time would make we want to do it regardless.

Haynes says 36k or 3 years.

It should cost you around 2 hrs labour plus the price of a belt at £15-20. Also whilst you are there it may be wise to fit a new tensioner and a new water pump, they are not expensive items.

Reading this made me feel guilty that I hadn't changed mine in a while. I looked back through the stack of receipts etc and discovered I last did it in... 2004. Where did all the years go? I'm glad I did change the cambelt because a few stray fibres were just starting to appear by one of the teeth. That's probably where it would have broken if I'd left it much longer.
