Peco Exhaust System Restoration

Recommended Posts

Kezzer30

Ok so as u all know i like to share what ive been upto and i have been busy of late.

Now one thing ive been looking to sort on the 205 is the exhaust , its been on there for what looks like forever , everything is standard other than the backbox and even that seems to have been on a long time , extremely rusty and evidence of a few holes been patched up with sealant etc . It also has a small leak as was one of the only advisories on my last mot , all that said it had a nice 3 inch exit circle tip and sounds great but it does drone at 50+ in 4th and then 60/70 in 5th , ok so i wanted something similar just in better condition than the current and maybe abit leas drone would be perfect .

Que graham as ever he is never far away in my 205 world and he said he had an exhaust that would fit the bill and it is a peco system taken from one of his many 205s now its been doing nothing other than rusting for a few years but despite this i belive it was worth keeping ad it seems solid still , picture time!

So as i was given it as u can see doesnt look the best

So intense rust beating

Give it a wash and as u can see its solid worth saving!

Decided to get to work on the tip , it had loads of black marks that wouldnt budge by washing or polishing and had a v shape where the previous bumper had been sat , but after so hard work she is looking clean and shiny again

Clean and looking virtually brand new

Seemed cery fitting to restore it back to red as peco did before and this backbox is looking spot on now , i will update with fully dry pic later and then update this when i finish the center box and pipes etc

I had a peco on my 1st car but when it got like that I got a full stainless system to replace it, was powerflow and sounded as good if not better imo. Done a good job tho

Blimey Peco that's a name from the past - had one of their systems on my 1st ever car a 5 door 1.3 Escort LX :)

You've certainly got that looking much nicer now than it was :)

That's one heck of a rescue job, yep. But - without wanting to rain on your parade, is it worthwhile?

What's doing the baffling inside the box? Is there any left in there? (And will there be in a 1000 miles or so?)

I've had (non-Peco) back boxes on various cars "die" not through external rot, but by the wadding exiting the tailpipe or the internal steel baffles rotting through - sitting around unused after years of use just exacerbates it.

Thats something i have to hope is still ok but tbh like ive said they where highly recomended in there time so it seems to be worth a shot , and as (cost wise) its not breaking the bank to have ago , and regardless the system that is on mine now is well and truly done for .

Ok so big update now and I hope u all like pictures as I have plenty of them , so it was time to tackle the rest of the system and here is a quick reminder of what I was up against

null_zps9e070555.jpg

So time to crack down and save this , I went out and boosted my tools and got some wire brushes for my sander etc in a bid to help me ,

null_zpscfc60313.jpg

Around 2hours of hard work and some great progress had being made on the center box and the small exit pipe etc

null_zps9bfd066b.jpg

I then spend another few hours on the long end of the pipe and as you can see its really is a solid system

null_zps7c08770c.jpg

I then spent another hours finishing it off ready for some paint

null_zps5478c8c4.jpg

I then gave the full thing a high temp resistant black coating

null_zps061a5368.jpg

Then I galvanised it to protect it from future rust

null_zps8206054e.jpg

Then a final touch of painting then center box red to match the backbox , we'll hope you all like the effort and I'm delighted with it and I leave u with a picture than sums it all up and will update once it's on the car , cheers guys

I had a Peco on my first GTi. I remember them as being the exhaust of choice purely because they were cheap and nearly every car parts place stocked them. The internet not being invented then was a hindrance.

I had a BB2 on my G reg Miami back in the day. I thought it was mint then. But then again I used to like Cherry Bombs...

Ok so small update on this was all set for the car today but a minor set back had put this off until tommorrow

The exhaust clamps we picked up turned out to be a tad too small

Looks good, I know you said you galvanised it but im guessing that's on the outside? Exhausts usually rust from inside out from the condensation not being burnt off on short trips

Looks like you have done a thorough job, however for the cold zinc galv spray to work as intended it needs to go on bare metal, not on top of the primer as you have done. It will just act as another layer of paint but not give any extra protection.

I think more specifically that particular system, over something more well regarded.
