Simple Way To Lower Emissions ?

Recommended Posts

bondyshambles

I have been through the searches and there is loads on here but some threads seem to be conflicting. Took my car in yesterday (none cat) and it was just over on Co2 emissions. I have heard things like taking the air filter out etc to cure the problem. The car passed last year with the current air flow meter but to be honest it is running richer than Sheikh Mohammed. I have been running a different airflow meter in the last 6 months on the car and don't know weather to change it back over and take a flyer. I would rather just adjust the one that i have on the car as it only just failed. Will adjusting the main allen key on the airflow meter be good enough to get it through or not and if so which way do it turn it to make it leaner ? The only thing that i have had done on the car in the last year is having the injectors cleaned. The car has only done 5k since the last MOT having had a full Peugeot service done before (ie air filter, spark plugs etc are all OE). The car will be getting set up properly in the next month or so but as i said is there a quick fix ?

Thanks in advance

Get it set up on a Gas anyliser, the MOT man can do this with an Allen key and a screwdriver

Wind the adjustment screw on the AFM out (anti-clockwise) until CO (NOT CO2!) is around 1% or so. If it's that rich, you'll need a few turns.

If it's running rich enough to fail the MOT emissions, that'll almost certainly be what's messing up your idle btw - they tend to hunt quite badly when rich.

Ha i love being dumb. The CO reading was 3.663 % and its supposed to be less than 3.5 % so not massively over but if you say i should get it down to 1% then it is a lot of difference in theory. I took it to Tyre Sales and when i asked them how could i get it through, the tester said "Sorry mate i don't know". It also failed on a ball joint. I tried to book it back in with them to do the work and the answer was "We haven't got anyone to do the work" . What sort of effect will this have on the idle if i turn the AFM anti clockwise? Will it become a bit of a balancing act between the AFM adjustment and the idle adjustment?

Find a better garage to use is my advice. RG Motors Green Lane Studley is a decent guy.

Adjusting the idle mixture probably won't have too much impact on the idle speed, but it will improve the idle quality - usually when they're running as rich as yours, they tend to hunt around at idle (ie revs going up and down) and have a habit of stalling and generally not idling very well.

As for the balljoint, hopefully it is that and not an ovalled hub, which is usually mis-diagnosed by MOT testers as a failed balljoint.

I agree with Tom though - the garage sound pretty hopeless (or simply don't want to do the work) and you'd be wise finding a better one.

How bizarre. I just drove past the place today. I love Green Lane. Apart from Sundays with all the car boot action. I will try them. Cheers.

Yes garage is not the best but the MOT was only £25. I now see why. I will give it a try. Thanks for your help.

My dad lives near the top of the Slough, hence I know the area well.
