My 205 Just Wont Start... Giving Up On It Now

Recommended Posts

lewis205cti

Hi all. I'm hoping someone has the answer I need as I'm about to give up on my 205. I just cant get it to start. I've looked at previous threads and beleive i have tried all that has been mentioned.

My 205 1.9 cti ph2 turns over but does not fire up. The problem is no power getting to the fuel pump. If I run the fuel pump off the battery the pump works and the car runs fine.

But there appears to me no power getting to the fuel pump. I've traced the fuel pump wires. The green and yellow to the earth point behind the rear passenger light. No brakes in the wire and the earth is good.

The white wire no 76 traced to the fuse board then to the tachymetric relay. All looks to be in order here too. No broken fueses or stuck relays too.

I've tried 2 tachymetric relays and no joy, it is possible that both are knackered.

Does anyone have any ideas, lives close to high wycombe and wants to earn some beers?

Its driving me nuts. Also I dont think its the toad alarm causing the issue.

Thoughts wekcome.

Ta lewis

Does a local member have a fuel relay I can just try to eliminate this from the list. Many thanks lewis. That is if this controls power to the fuel pump.

Miles

Alarm is the key word, Check what circuit it cuts out and bypass it.

As miles says does the alarm work but cutting fuel or spark? if its designed to cut fuel then im sure that will be your problem, i live in high wycombe and could help you out with anything mechanically or bodywork but wiring and electricals are my MAJOR downfall, my 205 wasnt starting for weeks (no spark) and then suddenly started on saturday. i feel your pain.

If you get really stuck, I'll pop over one night after work and take a look at it - I've got spare tachymetric relays and am pretty capable when it comes to vehicle electrics, bodged alarm installs and general Frenchness, so it shouldn't be too hard to identify what's amiss.

Have you got a multimeter? If so, it should be easy enough to identify the fault yourself.

Thanks for the info guys. Its still get spark but no fuel. Not had a chance to trace the alarm install due to work but looking at some of the wiring I found it looks very after market and bodged. Tristen I may have to ask bodywork advice soon after I finish the mechanical. I'll pm you when at that stage if I get stuck.

Anthony if I have no joy soon I'll let you know and will take you up on your offer. Borrowing a multimeter this weekend. Thanks lewis.

Can you here the fuel pump relay working? Has it got power to and from the relay

Check the fuses in the shunt box on the slam panel and that the plugs are firmly pushed into the bottom of it. I had exactly the same problem on my phase 2 after swapping the engine, turned out that I had dislodged the fuse link in the shunt box.

I can hear the relay working/clicking and I have checked and swapped out all the fuese and relays i can find. I'll be having a good hunt and tackeling the alram this weekend so will report back.

Fingers crossed.

As you may have noticed i've not had a chance to look at the pug. I've been working up in Birmingham. I'm planning on looking at it tonight so will update tomorrow.

On the plus side my 309 Gti has enjoyed 2 weeks for blasting from high wycombe to brum.

2-Pugs

Why not temporarily connect the fuel pump to a 12v supply. It should run continuously. At least then you could see if it the engine runs and it proves that the fuel pump is definitly the problem. There is also the possibility that power is getting to the fuel pump, but it is not working. Connecting directly to 12v will check whether the pump is actually working or not.

Thanks, The car starts and runs perfectly with the fuel pump connected directly to the battery. So I'm 99% sure it is the alarm system. Going to trace the wiring to see if there is an issue or remove it if possible. I'll update and I'm sure I'll have other questions.

Found the problem. So simple in the end. The middle thin white wire that runs to the connector where the tachymetric relay plugs into had broken up. It looked ok at first but it had gone hard and the wire inside to plastic had broken up so no current was getting to/from the tachymetric relay. On inspection all to wires into the connector look hard and crispy.

Can you get a new loom for this. Was tempted to cut out the connector and wire directly to the fuel relay itself?

Has anyone had to do this in the past? Anyone got the good loom or better ideas etc?

Thanks

Lewis

Yes I've re terminated using spades before, but mine were in a sealed box. Mine was cutting out going over bumps.

Ditto , i had to replace the connector along with the wiring (not complete wiring/loom) cos my relay caught fire and melted the connector and some of the wires .

Found an spare connector at the scrapyard along with 10/15cm of its wiring , cut the loom down the connector till the spot where all the wires where sound and soldered them together , heat shrink tubes on top warped with insulation tape and job done .

Thanks guys. Glad mines is not the only one. I'll spade connector it and hopefully find a good spare loom. Ta lewis
