Rear Metal Disk Brake Guard Assembly

Recommended Posts

bondyshambles

Hi.....I have noticed that the rear metal disk brake guard on my car is completely loose. Just wandering how this could have happened. Is the guard held on with the rest of the brake assembly? or does it have its own screws/locating lugs ? or has a weld broke on it or something ?

Cheers.

It should be attached to the hub with three screws.

As omega says, the guard itself usually rusts away so if its loose, its likely that.

That and usually but not always the bolts rust in that bad they just break off when you try to undo them so get left hanging on to the grim end.

Funnily enough I just replaced one on my car that fell off about 2 years ago.

The surrounds rusts away and leaves 3 cap head screws in place - one of which will undoubtedly round off in the process of removal.

I find they tend to snap rather than round off, though a firm smack to the allen key bit often helps, not that it matters, as they get binned anyway.

Any particular reason why?

I had a horrendous noise. Took the wheel off and the guard just fell out. Rusted away lol

Because they don't really serve a porpoise.

Yep, both of mine fell off after the first 3 months of getting the car back on the road. I'm still yet to get the rear wheels off to see the damage they have caused to my nicely powder coated alloys.

designed to protect the rear disks, obviously, disks being a consumable item, then no real point in having them apart from economy, economy not being a word associated with this car... kind of similar to the zinc blocks on outboard marine engines, the zinc sacrifices itself for the sake of immediate components, depends on use but never really seen the benefits of these guards in my experience.

They're designed to protect the disks from splashed water so when you hit the pedal when you need it most you don't start hedge trimming when you least expect it

Well had a look at this today and found one bolt missing, one sheared off and the plate had rusted away where the only bolt was. It's in for an MOT this week so managed to use a big washer to hold it and found another bolt for the one that was missing as a temp measure. Gives them something less to fail it for .

I seriously doubt that.

Badgers, ginger kids, aids, rhird world debt, a nuclear holocaust? I dunno, but i do know they are useless. The reason i doubt the validity of your comment is that the front brakes do most of the work, so where are their shields if water is of such concern? I suppose the rear brakes might be more prone to the water and crap thrown up by the front wheels, but it's not going to significantly impair braking.

Agree, Water get's thrown off the disks through forward momentum of the pad skimming the disk surface anyway, never ever had an issue with water on disks... or ginger kids :)

Fair comment poo I myself don't see the point of them other than to make any job ten times longer when needing to remove them but that is what they are supposed to be for, a quick google suggests they are also dust guards, but what they are meant to guard dust against is anyone's guess,l probably ginger kids.

Looking at service pox the fronts are meant to have them too???
