Handbrake Brake Balance

Recommended Posts

Projectuno

I have unequal braking balance when I apply the handbrake. I tend to apply the handbrake a perhaps 1 or 2 mph when parking and noticed that only one side is really doing anything.

I have checked the brake shoes and all is well. Is there a manual adjustment?

First before anything else make sure the brake shoes are adjusted up properly. The auto adjusters are often false advertising as they are not auto and they do not adjust.

After that if the shoes are adjusted well in good condition and no wheel cylinder leaks then look at the handbrake cables. Often the metal spiral can collapse meaning it exerts no pressure on the backplate hence no handbrake effort, OR one side can seize.

To be honest they are nice and cheap so if they are at all suspect treat it to a new pair.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply.

So far, I have replaced the wheel cylinder and bled the brakes. I visually inspected the shoes and there is plenty of material on them.

I am not familiar with how the adjuster works, I saw the wheel with teeth on it and all looked fine but was not aware that it could switch between manual or auto adjustment.

I did have an assistant apply the handbrake whilst I had the hub off and it did move, perhaps just not enough.
