Inlet Port Holes?

can someone tell me what the small oval holes are between the inlet ports on my 1.9 gti head? i have a few heads and two of them have the holes but the other two dont,

one of the heads i have has has port work done to it, but the other looks standard.

Not used by a gti, iirc used in carb engines.

Looks just like part of the casting, just a web rather than a solid piece of material
