Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Is it possible to remove and fit a starter motor without removing the inlet manifold..ie could I do it by just removing the throttle body, air intakes?

Thanks.

Yes. Depending on the size of the starter you might also be able to remove it from below - just undo the starter to gearbox bolts and the support bracket on the other end of the starter (if fitted) and drop it down.

You can remove any starter without removing the rad or inlet manifold, even the original large ones.

Thanks gents,

Replacing the old unit with a used slim model.

Looks a bit tight from the bottom so I'm going to have a go from the top end.

Pull the oil filler off the block to give more space, you wont get it out the top without removing other parts

Mei,

Will it come out from the bottom if I loosen it off from the top?

I did one last week, I took the bolts out of the front panel and pulled the radiator forward, gave me a bit of room.

It all comes out the bottom, you don't have to remove anything. The only annoying that you may have is the starter support bracket bolted to the block, remove and throw away.

Expect some grazed knuckles, jiggle it all out.

Hi everyone,

What a difference in size of the 2 starter motors..

Managed to remove the large motor but ended up loosen the inlet manifold to remove it.

It had a gasket on but it was gunked up with silicone either side of the gasket!!

Do I need both, the gasket and silicone?

There does seem to be water ways that the silicone is blocking!

Any help would be much appreciated.

you don't need both, either a gasket or sealant will suffice, those water ways don't do anything on a gti inlet though I would dig out any silicone that is bunged into them as you don't want any of that floating around inside your engine.

Mei,

As I pulled the manifold away from the head water was seeping from the head.

I've ordered a gasket so I'll give that a go first.

it will do that, so don't forget to dry off and top up the cooling system when you've finished.
