Fuel Pump Permanently On

Hi Everyone,

 

I bought myself a Peugeot 205 1.9 1992 CTI September 2012, bought the car for a bit of fun and nostalgia and has grown on me so much I will given time restore it to mint condition.

 

The car until last week has been running fine, however, when I went to start the car the other day the following problem has occurred. I have the original ancient Peugeot immobiliser, put the fob in as normal so the immobiliser was disarmed. Turned the ignition key, dashboard lights come on, fuel pump starts but then nothing. No clicking or turning of the motor nothing. Took the ignition key out but the fuel pump stays on !

 

The only way to stop the fuel pump is to disconnect the battery.

 

I have managed to start the car by running a wire directly from the starter motor to the battery, when I do this the car starts immediately as normal as before. So I have 2 issues giving me a headache.

 

1) Why does the fuel pump stay on ? is it a fault relay and if so where could it be

2) If the fault is with the immobiliser why is it keeping the fuel pump on, it should disable not engage it.

 

Any help would be much appreciated.

tachymetric relay sticking, its next to the ecu by your right knee.

 

plus a starter motor issue of some kind, possibly related to the immobiliser, or the common corroded solenoid wire that needs replacing from starter motor back to the under dash brown multiplug next to the steering column.

you either have a duff ignition barrel not giving the starter solenoid the switched live, or you have a break in the wiring to the starter from the ignition barrel. as for the fuel pump, could be a sticky tachometric relay - usually under the dash, driver side, roughly by your right knee when sat in the car.

 

check the little yellow wire is getting a switched live not a permanent live.

Chances are, giving the tachymetric relay a sharp tap to the casing will unstick it and switch the fuel pump off, although the fault will probably reoccur sooner or later.

Thanks for all the comments, at least I now have something to work on this weekend. Anyone have any suggestions as the best place to get the relay from ? Would rather buy a new one then a second hand one.

Ignition switch.

 

This can get worn and you get a very weak or non existent current to the solenoid.

 

We changed mine and it started first time. No problem since.

 

As mentioned change the relay. Mine did this too... Might help to drain the battery too..

The relay is about £110 of Peugeot, so best to go to a factor to get this part they are about £40 from them.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. Welshpug I think you may have hit the nail on the head with both suggestions ! Tachymetric relay was replaced but still got intermittent issues. Sent to a mechanic and he found a multiplug under the thermostatic housing ????? this was replaced/cleaned up and everything is now starting on the button again without any issues. So far anyway !

 

Got the relay from Peugeot cost £90 + Vat. Why is it nobody calls it a tachymetric relay ? when I spoke to Peugeot they had never heard of it, was only when I took it in they knew what it was. Has the Haynes manual made this up themselves ?

Tachymetric means it closes its contacts when it sees a pulsed signal, the chances are anyone working at Peugeot now doesn't remember pre computerised cars and so doesn't understand what is different about it compared to a normal relay.
