Help Ignition Timing 205 Gti 1.6

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

been busy at work on the 205 trying to get the old girl to point where she sits and runs sweet.

recently replaced the distributor for a new recon bosch unit and im having trouble setting advance i have done the whole procedure and set it with a timing gun.

but under load up to 3 to 3.5k the engine feels like its holding back on power under full wide open throttle. after 3.5k the car pulls really well up to the 6k point (cant wait to drop a new camshaft in)

my main reason for the post is when you set the ignition timing with the gun do you set the gun to 10 degrees advance or do you look in the gear box aperture for the timing plate on flywheel and set it to 10 with the gun on 10. much help appreciated as if i can get this bit sorted i can possibly rule out its due to no vacuum advance at WOT or a failing afm as one pin inside does look like it has had some heat on it the connector looks blue at the tip instead of cooper

any help appreciated

A blue terminal is corrosion not heat.

Vac advance works when you close the throttle for off wot ignition timing, hence why you set wot timing with vac capsule disconncted.

Find a gradient, drive up in high gear and see if it pinks, if not then add more, if it does, wind it back a touch.

Or take it to a rr tuner.

These methods are far more accurate these days as 30 years of fuel technology has happened since the original timing settings were made.
