Tappy Gti 6

another classic tapping gti6...

my gti 6 has tapped ever since i bought it but has become more apparent with the hot weather having the windows down. looking for some causes?

it has full service history and hasnt had a cambelt snap and is currently on aroound 70,000 miles

iv found this video and it sounds very similar to mine indeed although perhaps slightly louder than mine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-KAMmscb5I

he recons that it was running low compression on two cylinders and had noisey injectors

i havent had mine compression tested so i dont know about that

but could this noise be purely from injectors? sounds silly but iv looked around at various different threads and lots of people say 306 injectors are famous for being loud?

any ideas? hoping its not bottom end related which hopefully it shouldn't be....

Could be just noisy injectors mines very tappy like that. Had it checked by specialist RR ect runs spot on. Their just noisy!

If you have full history and no evidence of cambelt failure you should be able to rule it out.

Try dropping the oil and putting some decent stuff in. Mine quietned a little after I did so.

Injectors make a "tick" noise quite different from the tale-tale "tap".

Just because it has FSH it doesn't mean anything I'm afraid. Firstly you've no idea what work has happened outside of the documented history, and you've no idea whether the work that has been documented has been done properly. For example, I know of three seperate instances where Peugeot dealers have catastrophically screwed up the belt change on an 8v (which is probably the most straight forward cambelt swap going) so it seems far from unbelieveable that whoever swapped the belt messed up and dinked a valve or two, particularly if they didn't verify the lower pulley hadn't slipped (very common).

Worth making sure that it's not a spark plug that's come loose, as that makes a vaguely tap-like sound and is surprisingly common on 6's
