Where To Locate Mocal Oil Cooler

Recommended Posts

Gman

Just thought I'd update this thread with pics of how I located mine, just in case anyone else is thinking of doing the same.

Nice and easy really, just line the cooler up, cut the fan cowling and then fix with the supplied brackets.

Not clear in the picture but are those oil cooler pipes going to rub and chaff where they're cable tied against the metal bar under the radiator? Personally I think that I'd wrap something around them there to prevent any risk of that happening and the resultant catastrophic oil leak that would ensue.

there really isn't any movement between the engine and the cooler due the harder mounts fitted. However, agree that something should be wrapped around the pipes, either completely or just at the bodywork contact points, as a matter of caution.

I have ordered some metal sheathing for exactly this, but no doubt I will route things slightly differently once all the supercharging stuff is bolted on!

One concern when mounting coolers solidly to the fan cowling is that they can expand quite a bit with heat, enough to jam the fan in worst cases!

Should always be mounted on rubber bobbins really.

i have also seen oil coolers that are mounted on bobbins split at the pipe connection points as there was too much flex in the hoses which in turn work hardened that alloy and subsequently cracked causing major oil spray in engine bay.

admittedly it was in a MK2 escort but the cause and symptoms would be potential problems in any vehicle!

you could always use 'bulkhead fittings' on the front panel with 90 degree fittings instead of looping the oil hose under the panel
