Where To Locate Mocal Oil Cooler

Recommended Posts

Gman

After experiencing very high oil temperatures on track, I would like to fit a mocal oil cooler before my next outing.

I've had a good search, but can anyone recommend a suitable place to locate a 16 row cooler? I'm running a gti6 engine with the rad in the standard position, and I want to keep my driving lights to maintain its OE exterior looks.

I haven't bought any parts yet, but there appear to be some good deals on ebay at the moment. However, those that have some useful locations suggestions, do you know how long the pipes should be before I order them and find they're too short or long?

Oh, and is it necessary to run a shorter oil filter when using a sandwich plate?

Thanks

Graham

i just fitted the exact thing to my car. Still running two fans aswell. Had to chop a bunch of plastic off the fan shoud and a small amount of the front spoiler but looks bloody tidy imo, and the brackets were super simple to make. also flick over to the last page for a few more pictures

Tell me if you cant see the pictures etc without being a member and ill post the induvidual pics.

Cheers for that, but you need to login to gain access.

Can you copy the pics on to here?

I doubt it wouldn't give enough cooling tbh, as the oil temp was touching about 115' after about 7-8 laps of a 2.5 mile circuit

115 is not excessive, keeps all 1.9's cool enough!

I wouldn't say that 115 degrees is especially high, if that is an accurate reading of course...

Usually you can tell when the oil is getting too hot as the oil pressure begins to noticeably drop off. "Proper" performance oriented oil helps significantly with this compared to a typical 10W40 semi that you'd typically use on the road.

When I've fitted oil coolers in the past, I've mounted them where the second fan would sit if fitted as per the OE 1.9 oil cooler, cutting the cowling as required. Usually you can do it so that it's completely invisable and looks standard. I don't have any pictures to hand though unfortunately.

Hose length will depend where you're mounting the cooler and how you're routing the pipework - use an old length of garden hose or hydraulic pipe to mock up roughly and give you the correct lengths.

If you've removed the oil-water heat exchanger then you should still be able to run a normal sized oil filter just fine, although a short one will give you more space.

What's the second to last white marker? As that's what it was hitting.

Doesnt' the gti6 engine generate more heat than the standard 8v though?

The problem is that the temp was still increasing and thus I had to come in, despite the tyres and brakes still being ok. Ideally, I want to stay out for between 12-14 laps.

Anthony - that sounds like a good place to put it.

Ive had a 13 row in the driving light aperture. But am now mounting a much larger cooler in the area where youd expect a 2nd fan. Temps in sump were 140 at last outing which is getting a bit too hot! One thing to bear in mind is that if you ditch the cowling all together it contains mounting points for the grille.

Can also second that using a good quality motorsport oil will reduce your temps due to the lower friction characteristics. I had 140 on a track day which then dropped to 120 when switching oils in same ambient. Pushing the car a bit harder now hence the bigger cooler needed!

I should be keeping the cowling for the time being, so that looks like the best place to put it at the moment.

I also use the car for weekend blasts, trips to the shops etc. Can you still use motorsport oil for track use and daily drives, or would it be a little thick for when i'm not thrashing it?

Henry, any idea how long your oil pipes are? And how are they routed?

As long as it's an appropriate grade performance oil will be fine on the road.

An oil cooler will probably over cool though, even with a thermostatic sandwich plate. In the winter particularly you might find you need to block the coolers airflow otherwise the oil will never warm up properly.

Thanks - noted.

It's unlikely that I'll be running it in the winter months, so hopefully that won't become a problem.

Any oil recommendations? Can I still use 10w 40 but from a performance range by someone like Fuchs?

If you take a look on page 2 of my struggle thread, I have fitted a thermostatic mocal oil plate, braided hoses and a mocal 13 row cooler where the 2nd fan should be however i had to remove all the inside of the entire cowling and fit a slimline fan. Its really neat and the oil temp never goes past 3/4 even when it was 33 degrees and I should imagine the turbo lump will heat up a lot faster and higher than a gti6 lump too. I got mine from ebay but they sell all the parts seperately, links on my thread

I have now changed the orentation on the cooler and now have the fittings on the top as it made for a tidyer install. Note i am still running both fans! :)

Hi Slo,

Any chance you can remember how long your hoses were, and did you simply run them under the radiator?

Thanks

Running your oil cooler there is risky business. 1 Chipping from the road and you'll have a engine rebuild required :)

They are very short and it would be quite difficult to measure them now as they are buried inside the front end but this picture gives you some idea from when i got it, pipes go right under the radiator through a section of the cowling i had to cut out it only just fits because the end are fixed so you can only fit it in limited positions, was very awkard.

Do you mean in the fan housing, or poking out of the valance like the pics show?

Where would you suggest?

Nice. Good to see you have proper hoses instead of the ones mocal supply! Good idea to get one with a stat also if your intending to use it on the road at all.

I've got a 13 row in the same place as 2052NV and Anthony.

Are you sure you need an 18 row? If it is for an all and out track car fair enough, but I find my car easily keeps at a nice temp when giving it the beans. Surely with a 13 row and good oil it would keep within a decent temperature range?

By cutting away more of the cowling you can mount it slightly higher if your bothered about foreign object damage ;)

Drill lots of holes and get the hacksaw out to make adequate space to mount it. A bit of trial and error. I managed to get three brackets on securely, without drilling through the shell.

im not running a thermostat as im using the factory sandwich plate, my car is only a weekend worrior and track day hack. so will not running a thermostat be bad or do i just need to be a bit more pateant before i start thrashing it after start up?

Does the gti6 engine come with a cooler standard when fitted in a 306

But still well worth fitting a mocal for track use then? Would anyone insist in one or just a precaution

I wouldn't insist, but if you want to keep out on track for longer then one is required.
