Do Random People Stop And Ask You About Your Car

Recommended Posts

As above,

I have been getting more and more people staring at my 205, people asking me about it at filling stations etc. Do you mind people doing it? Do you take time and chat to them.

Discuss.

They are much rarer now so I think there is more interest

Hardly ever see another one in my town, if I get comments tbh they are always complimentary

I quite like it in this age of grumpiness and non-communication

One guy a few weeks ago was trying to tell me that because mine is over 25 years old I could run without a tax disc - he's wrong and I didn't correct him but he liked the car

I have never had anyone come up to me and say "nice car mate" in any other car I've ever owned and I've owned quite a few!

It's a bit like being in a club, maybe someone should set up a forum ;)

Petrol stations is the main one... You hear quite a few stories from past 205 drivers. I always welcome compliments and take the time to chat.

I always get a few thumbs up when in traffic jams, and "nice little motor".

But then you get the C%$Ts, who want to cut you up and try and under take you, when your in the fast lane because they think your driving a s*itty old car.

Uneducated undesirables.

I get constant thumbs up on the motorway, and questions in petrol stations and car parks. Had a chat with a guy in tescos the other day, said he'd been spotting it regularly for a while as I drive past his house to work.

I think the way mine looks makes it very popular with the DUB crowd, who are suprisingly friendly. I even had half a conversation with I guy in a mk1 polo on the motorway, shouting through open windows.

Even had a kid excitedly wave his teddy bear from the back of a landrover this morning, followed by a cheeky wave from the milf in the front

I don't get many compliments mine is a bit shed-ish.. well very shed-ish, but the most recent was a guy in a evo 5 who obviously had a xs previously as he really liked it

I am "Random Man" lol! And as from next week I may just get mine out the garage, only been stuck there due to a car on axle stands blocking the garage door for four years.

When this thread was first posted I didn't recall anything but the post above reminded me of a couple of occasions...

I even had half a conversation with I guy in a mk1 polo on the motorway, shouting through open windows.

I remember a similar chat about 15 years ago on the M11, 205s weren't really considered classics then though, I suspect we were probably hooligans

and something very similar to that happened to me on the way home from a forum south meet probably about 5 years ago. I was driving my mates stripped, caged red 16v 205 in a traffic jam on the motorway when I noticed a red base model 205 next to me with two kids in child seats in the back staring with open mouths at a much lower, wider, noiser version of their mum's car with a built in climbing frame

I've only driven mine once and that was the drive from Coventry to Glasgow after collection. I got a compliment from the guy at the toll booth on the M6. Thumbs up from a stream of evo's that must have been at some meet and got into a conversation with a guy at the local Tesco petrol station as his first car had been a 1.9.

It was a strange sensation to be driving something that people didn't look at and instantly think "cock".

My superchercharged car used to get lots of attention because of the noise, mainly unwanted to be honest. Barely anyone asked why it whined, they used to prefer to inform me 'your cars f***ed' or 'your fan belts to tight' etc. One day a child told me 'your car sounds gay', this cut deep, I considered trading it in for an mx5 to regain some of my masculinity :P

I had it yesterday, some old guy was staring at my car for ages, :D until I came out of the gym. Ended up talking to him for about 15 minutes about the 205.

He said he used to have one, and always loved them ;)

I was filling up with fuel in Germany last week and an old chap in a berlingo next to me started gesturing and pointing with a massive grin on his face. There was a complete language barrier but I got the idea he was saying he used to have one :) I showed him under the bonnet and he nearly burst a blood vessel, told me I was crazy and went back to filling up his berlingo!

Being a daily driver I get a lot of positive comments about mine, easily at least 1 a week.

Most recently I was in a tool shop the other day (owner has porsche 911 gt3) and another customer walked in saying to him 'see that 205, proper car that better than that german piece of sh1t if yours'.

'Is it yours?' He said to me. So trying to hide my smug look I say yeah it is :)

You all know what his next question was...

'Is it a 1.6 or 1.9?', to which I proudly replied 1.9, 16v ;)

Then everyone in the shop started talking about when they had 205s and how everyone wanted to put mi16's in them back in the day. My girlfriend will never understand...

Happens quite a lot these days.

"What is it, a 1 6 0r a 1 9?" they ask as they take a side step and peer around the side to see the quarter badges.

"2 litre Turbo" Always leads to more questions.

I've also had positive comments. Last month a stranger gave me a car mechanics engine management book which covered the 205 gti and mi16 engine. Great read!

Had the normal comments at petrol stations etc and some big f*** off biker pull up to me, look it up and down, and then give me the thumbs up. Had some young t*** and his boyfriend in a 206cc with his roof down cut me up the other day though. Weird how his hair was perfect and never moved even with his roof down. Must have been something to do with his day job  .

haha ^.

I've had comments. Usually "is that a gti" and when i tell them no it's a d tub i can hear their heart breaking and the smiles are swfitly wiped from their faces and their backs are turned to me. Like...hello...I am at your garage because i want work done...not to show off my smoker lol.

"i wanted a gti...couldn't afford one though so I bought a xr2" haha

May be the area im in but i've had looooads of muppets trying to push me along. Sometimes thing like modified ford escort rs...sorry mate..i've only got 78bhp haha. But also sometimes i get 1.1 106s with alloys, daewwo matiz with racing stripes.. Fiestas are the worst for it

I had a guy in a 1.1 205 come over and talk to me a while back (not sure if your on here?seen you at asda) asking me what engine i have... Coulcn't resist my smug little grin knowing that finally i had a better 205 than someone haha.

If I ever see another 205..if it's a base model i'll let them pull out infront etc...if they are gtis then they usually get a thumbs up, flash or a beep.

I've had people knock the door of my house and ask if it's for sale...people asking my girlfriend when i'm down hers if the car is hers and would i sell it. The amount of people that think it's a "rally car" aswell make me chuckle to no end. "what did you do with the roll cage" erm....it never had one hahah.

I've had garages refuse to belive me it's got gti subframe and suspension etc...noone around ehre has seen a STDT before so clearly i'm wrong and don't have a clue. Until it go up on the four poster and they've got to eat their own words. Even gone as far as ordering the wrong bits for my car because they havent listened to me. Won't be going to them again.

I actually had a group of 15-16 year olds the other day mutter "clutch" as in 'use the clutch' whilst pulling away...lol. Funny how children without even a provisional can tell you hwo to drive the car you've owned for the past 7 years.

Yup loads. It makes all the hassle and heartache worth it. Always when I fill up without fail. And just in general.

Not had anything negative apart from idiots at works who have no understanding of cars and think because its 26 years old and not a BMW its s*it.
