One Of Those 'doh!' Moments

Recommended Posts

TT205

After bumping my Saab a few months back I picked up an old Rav4 to keep the wife happy for winter

Rear brakes were fubar'd so after a couple of weeks had a guy I know well clean up the callipers and fit new rear discs

About a week later it started making intermittent awful metallic grinding noises, especially when coming off the power, braking seemed to have little effect on it

I spent quite some time jacking it up and swinging on everything and couldn't find any obvious excess play in anything

Took it back to same guy, he checked over to make sure it was nothing to do with what he'd done. He couldn't manually spin the back wheels fast enough to reproduce the noise so said it's likely to be

? bearing shell

? drive shaft

? worst case scenario - rear diff

So he recommended taking it to a 4WD specialist

I was going on holiday in 2 weeks so didn't want an 'unknown quantity' BIG credit card bill before I went so I parked it up and I've been driving around in my trusty phase1 for 5 weeks

Any road, on Tuesday I took it to a recommended Scooby guy, he rings me up half an hour later and says "who did your back brakes?" - "they haven't tightened up the calliper bolts!!"

Someone is going to be mighty embarassed! I'm just glad I haven't be shafted (pardon the pun) for new driveshafts, bearings, prop shaft and a rear diff!

So as I was saying

Doh!!

I wouldn't let him mess with your brakes again!

Some people need to stay away from the spanners!!
