Hole In The Roof, Where's The Water Going?

Recommended Posts

number2301

My 205 has got a small rust hole directly in front of the sunroof and the recent wet weather has got me thinking, where will the water be going?

I can't immediately find any water inside, so will it just be draining out somewhere? Or should I be worried?

90% sure it will find it's way inside and under the carpet somehow.

The underlay can soak up a lot of water before it's obvious by feeling the carpet. The rubber backed carpet can mask any dampness below it as well so sometimes won't be obvious.

I'd try to take the two front seats out and check under the carpet, but if your worried about seized seat bolts, then at least try to peel back the lower front corner of the door seals, remove the two kick panels and pull the carpet back from the bulkhead. This should let you feel enough of the underlay for any dampness.

Stick a bit of tape over the hole for a day or two until you can get the hole fixed.

Pop the headlining down and have a nosey. If the hole is fairly small the headlining may be absorbing it. No visible staining?

It's amazing how much water can actually get in these cars without being obvious. I had my pass door card off for a while and after a down pour noticed that the rain had being going down the gap of the shrunk window scraper seal, hitting the bottom of the inside of the door and bouncing out and over towards my DTA which was at the time hanging out below the glovebox.

I also happened to find myself in the boot during a spot of rain while the rear quarter cards were removed and noticed a drip drizzle down beneath the quarter window and down in to the rear quarter itself from where the seals again were slightly shrunk. It got the stage where after a downpour there would be a very small puddle down at the side of the rear seat area. All noticeable due to at the time having no interior at all. With seats, carpets and door cards in you'd not really notice until it was too late.

OK thanks, I'll try siliconing it up until I can afford to get it down to the body shop.

I've actually had the rear quarter window leak in a previous 205, jetwash is great for finding the leaks!
