Back Really Low? Catching On Tyre Too?

Recommended Posts

I have known std bar's to sag, It's not known until you lower the car on the ground, Mind I've only had 2 bars do this on 2 different cars so you get a wonky car

evening all; updating the situation

Drove the car up the chap who built it, 'Jord' on here. had the whole thing checked and gone over, the beam is absolutely as it should be. standard height, right torsion bars, right handed bushes, everything absolutely spot on.

but the car still sat low on it, which confused both of us.

leading to the conclusion, if the beam is absolutely correct and verified as correct, the back of the car isn't right, when i have the emotional reserves to go looking for the problem there,

raised the suspension so it sits as a standard heigh is took an extra 10mm, looks great, great service, great guy, job jobbed!

Are you sure that they're GTi torsion bars on the beam?

Base model bars are only fractionally thinner (18.5 vs 18.9mm) and hence not immediately obvious, but the difference in required shock length between them for standard ride height is about 8mm (322 vs 330mm) from memory which sounds exactly like what you're seeing. With a layer of paint / powder coat on the bars, you'd never be able to tell.

I cannot see how the rear of the car can be so out of whack as to make the beam sit low but not show any other obvious visible signs.

Fair play to Jord for taking a look though.

Without doubt the torsion bars were gti 19mm.

I don't bother keeping lesser model bars, due to the fact I am only supplying gti axles.

Even when taking 'gti' beams as part x, the first thing I do is make sure of the size of torsion bars by using a vernier. A few people have been caught out

It had me completely baffled, as we even tried a different set of bars. Which turned out to be exactly the same again.

Never ever had an issue like this in the past.

So the beam mounts/boot floor is 30mm higher than normal? Really?

Just back to the dampers, what's fitted now? I had a youth come to me a while back who'd fitted shortened dampers on a standard ride height car, it actually lowered the rear as they were so short, he'd had to jack the trailing arms to get them on. I'm sure jord would of spotted this though.

Dampers are peugeot dampers 5206te, as bought, no mods what-so ever,

There is also the issue of the wheel sitting too far back in the arch, which was also eliminated being the beam, as the handed bushes are round the correct way, so i think there is something going on with the back end of the car

im going to be at the retro-rides gathering this sunday at prescott, got a pass from a mate who has a stand/area i think (organised arent I) anyone who knows their stuff about the shells to have a look and inform me of how the shell is fubar'ed hah

Cheers

John

right! I have a tad more emotional reserves than when i started this thread. car now runs much much sweeter and its just niggles now!

Ive put a tape measure onto each direction of the wheel, would appreciate somebody doing the same? just so i know whats out, but i suspect is the rear bumper mounting up wrongly!

SILL TO WHEEL 40mm (please excuse the rust - crappy paint job :( )

REAR BUMPER TRIM TO WHEEL 20mm

only real discrepancy is the rear bumper, 15mm & 20mm.

if anyone can pop a tape measure onto theirs (standard ride height) that would be amazing!

Cheers

John
