Possible Wiring Issues/new 205 Gti6 Build - Help Needed!

Recommended Posts

Hi people, I have now almost completed my 205 GTi xu10j4rs conversion,

I have powered the loom etc up now the car starts but cuts out as soon as I turn the key back from starter position back to the running position it cuts out,

if I start the car and hold the key in the starter position the car continues to run, and rev??

I have read something in an guide/build thread that some of the loom lives switched over?

quite puzzled with this one and ideally could do with getting it all up and running so I can mot it on Saturday,

thanks in advance

Youve used the starter wire as the switched live.

is this an easy fix? ie can I just swap the wires around at the brown 6 pin multiplug under the dashboard?

GTI-6 19pin round plug - 205 brown multiplug

Beige 401 coolant temp sender - Red 47a coolant gauge
Yellow 410 oil pressure warning light - Purple 30 oil pressure light
Red 411 oil temp sender - White 30a oil temp gauge
Grey c120 reverse light switch - Dark grey 52 reverse light
Orange 220 reverse light switch - Purple 53 reverse light
Dark brown 1070 alternator warning - Dark grey 7a alternator light
Thick White 120 Fuel pump - White 76 fuel pump
white 400 coolant temp gauge sender - yellow 47 coolant light
Grey CC1 air bag control Switched live & grey 123 lambda switch live - Red 2a switched live
Red 426 rev counter - Grey 112b tacho feed
Thick White 100 switched +live to starter - Blue 46b starter
yellow 414 oil level gauge - grey 30b oil pressure gauge
yellow/green m444 permanent earth - m ignition amp permenant earth

I found this on this site, I guess its the 2 white wires I got mixed up on the loom?

the loom was already made when I bought the car, just needed putting back in the car and hooking up to an engine.

who knows, typically its the starter and switched live that are the wrong way round, but in that instance the engine would start turning over as soon as you turn the ignition on, which you didnt say it was doing.

just need to check those wires properly.

so it shouldn't be that hard to trace the wire that is wrongly connected, some one told me that these engines only need 4 wires to run? is that true? or does anyone know which wires I will need to trace through the loom to track this fault down?

wiring not really my strong point so that's why I am asking a lot of questions!

I think I have sorted the wiring issue. The plank I bought the car from had wired the fuel pump into the starter circuit. She starts n idles. Suppose I ought to put exhaust on now and stop upsetting the neighbours

Thought easiest to ask on a thread than start a new but I'm hopefully nearing the end of my gti6 wiring. It's a previously attempted job so I'm trying to get everything working as it should. The oil pressure, temp and pressure switch were all cut at the brown plugs as I believe the last owner ran different gauges. I've re soldered some new lengths of wire to run to the sensors but the temp and pressure switg are 2 pin connectors does the 2nd pin go to earth or link somewhere else?

There's only one pin that does anything so you only need one wire for each.

(indeed, I've not seen an oil pressure switch with two pins on it - the later ones have a 2 pin style plug but only one pin present typically)

Oh ok that makes life easier my oil pressure is s single spade but the oil temp in the sump and the oil switch in the block are both 2 pin connectors.

On the oil temp sensor it'll be the pin that gives a varying resistance to the sensor body/sump depending on temperature, and on the oil pressure switch it'll be the pin that is grounded with the engine off (no oil pressure) and open circuit with the engine running (ie when there's sufficient oil pressure).

Ah ok thanks so better off leaving the wiring off the sensors untill I've got it running then least I can get it prepared and routed nicely and just check once up and running, need fuel lines first though
