Standard Front Suspension Height?

Recommended Posts

happypatrol

I've now had two sets of springs fitted to the gti. To me it looks like its sitting way too high at the front. Can anyone tell me what sort of gap I should have between the tyre and the wheel arch. It's sitting at 90mm 3.5inch between the top of the tyre and the arch trim.

If someone with standard suspension could check and see what theirs is at that would be great.

I don't want to go back to my supplier if its me that's wrong but it just looks too high to me.

I've tried driving it etc to see of it will settle but its not going down at all.

My standard 1.9 GTi is in the region of about 3" front wheel to arch gap, and that's on >20 year old OE springs.

They do look like they're sitting quite high when they're standard!

measure the wire diameter, and free length if you can, also number of coils.

Tyre size is 185/55 15 Avon tyres all round.

4 full coils plus the two kind of half coils one at the top and one at the bottom ???

Coils are approx 14mm diameter across and 53 mm circumference.

Thanks guys

I don't think they are 53mm in circumference somehow...

I'm talking about the thickness of the spring. I don't know what you are on about.

Why did you bother putting the diameter and the circumference of the spring material up?

I never measured mine before taking the springs off, but an o.e 1.9 spring non pas non ac is two yellow paint marks.

12.60 mm wire diameter, 6 coils at a free length of 330mm.

if yours are 14mm+ it sounds like you have the wrong spring!

I bothered because it may be relevant.

Can you suggest anywhere that will supply me with the correct springs then???

Ive tried two sets of aftermarket springs with no joy. My parts supplier that supplies me daily for work stuff has apparently looked into it and they are trying to assure me that they are correct. But it just isnt right Its not massively high but i think it should be sitting at least an inch lower.

Thanks again.

Since ive bought this car ive been on there every day. The smallest things are going for silly money. But i guess if you need it you have to pay.
