Gti6 205, Fuel Filter, Banjo And Pipe Question

Recommended Posts

Hi :)

M fuel filter looks really old and I would like to replace it.

Could anyone advise what size banjo i should get also, as I think i am still running 6mm pipe to the inlet and have read on here that 8mm or 10mm is better?

Many thanks,

Jon

Should be 10mm pipe on the feed, and 8mm pipe on the return on a GTi-6 engine.

You can get the correct 10mm banjo for the fuel filter, and I would personally do that rather than try and clamp it down over an 8mm banjo like you've linked to (even though others seem to get away with it). There's atleast one supplier on eBay selling the correct banjo, although it's a generic listing rather than one specific for a 205 or GTi-6.

The 8mm return hose will go straight onto the end of the hard pipes under the car, so no worries there. Use proper fuel clips rather than jubilee's!

I use 10mm so that it matches the fuel rail inlet.

Thanks. Are there any perks to using 10mm, does the flow increase?

Not as such, but it's good practice to use a banjo sized to match the fuel hose, rather than over-clamping the hose to squash it down to a smaller sized banjo - particularly given the very real risk of a big engine bay fire should there be any leaks on the pressurised (feed) side of the fuel system.

Use the correct size hose clips.

I used one which was fine for several months, but I noticed it leaking fairly substantially when I took the car out of storage and ran the engine. What I had done in error was use a clip too small so when the clip was at its tightest, it wasn't tight enough. I could have had a serious issue had I not noticed!

Potentially teaching you to suck eggs, but doesn't hurt to throw it out there incase you happen to have some in a bag somewhere which 'fit'.

Could anyone please link me to a fuel filter and banjo which would suit my car? I want to make sure they fit each other!

Also, do you need to change the 'to' sender on the fuel filter?

Thank you.

I used a standard 205 GTi fuel filter, and left the hose from the under car hard lines to the filter as it was given that it was in excellent condition, just making a bracket to ensure that the fuel lines were held away from the exhaust manifold (the GTi-6 manifold sits perilously close to the hoses as standard and would eventually cause them to fail IMO).

The banjo you need I'm pretty sure is this one, but as I'm at work I don't have a fuel filter to hand to double check. Certainly that's the company I bought mine from when I did my conversion.

Others have done things differently, including using different fuel filters, mounting the filter in a different place (typically where the jack used to sit) or replacing the under car lines and routing the engine bay end differently to move it well clear of the exhaust manifold. If you read a few GTi-6 conversion / project threads, you'll see how others have chosen to do it and you can choose whichever method you think is best for your requirements.

it'll do the trick, data from the bosch electronic catalogue -

Description Fuel filter, gasoline injection -

Part number 0 450 905 104 -

Designation Fuel filter, gasoline injection -

Production discontinuation - -

Trade abbreviation (HKB) F 5104 -

Search number (KSN) F 5104 -

Diameter (unpacked) 81 mm -

Threaded connection, inlet M 12 x 1,5 -

Threaded connection, outlet M 14 x 1,5 -

Height (unpacked) 129 mm -

Housing unit 0,4 l -

Diameter 1 74 mm

I think they have the inlet and outlet the wrong way round however as the lower copper washer is on servicebox as being 14.1mm i.d.
