As title says really people's

I've got an 03 plate Golf v64motion and have been offered a swap for a 206 gti180....

That's on a 52 with 93k....

Anything to look out for on the 206 and what do you reckon, good shout?

Thanks a lot!

I think if you've got a 205 GTI already, I'd probably stick with the V6 4 Motion over the 206 GTI. The 206 GTI got pretty mediocre reviews - I like the V6 Golfs and the Mk4 is a nice solid car...it just got a bad press because of the lacklustre 2.0 GTI models. Depends on your reasoning though - e.g. fuel economy!

After owning a 180 I would never swap a Golf 4 motion for one. By all means try it out but I bet it will feel badly made after getting out of the Golf.

There is a reason they are so cheap these days.

I used to have one of those golfs and while I never really rated it I still think you'd be mad to swap it for a 206gti 180.

I know they're very plasticy inside and would be a shock to system going from a solidly built golf but there has to be some ups to a 180 isn't there?

I don't know bugger all about them to be honest, I never really took to them when they first come out! I've got me 205, she's got a dirty old 406 diesel to run about in so its only really going to be for me to blat about in!

I would miss my golf though! hahaha

Cheers for the input!

personally I'd sell the golf privately then buy the 180,

I don't like golfs, they're the only car I have actually felt car sick in for a very very long time, rubbish to work on, plagued by electrical issues, I wouldn't call them solidly built either, just heavy

You not rate them no?!

I had the vr6 before and wanted the r32 but at the time I'd not long had my son and she said NO in capitals, as it was too hard, only a 3 door blah blah blah.... So I got that (a 3 door! :D ) as a the best of both worlds! Love it, its just bloody thirsty and quite expensive all round!

Can see the general gist of the way too go know though!

Golf for me! The 206 feels outdated, cheep and generally a lesser car to me, and the Golf will probably still be on the road in 5 years time, where as the 206 probably wont!

I had the VR6 before mine as well and a Mk2 16V before that (which was the car that followed my first 205gti).

For a while i couldn't see past Golfs. I liked my Mk2 so bought the VR6 as an upgrade but really it wasn't that much of an upgrade looking back at it objectively. From the VR6 I went to the 4 motion but it was another upgrade that seemed more like a down grade in real terms. Performance compared to running costs were also a massive downer. A chance test drive in an EP3 type R while i owned the 4motion was like being blind and suddenly getting my sight back. It did everything the golf could do only better. And that included build quality and reliability.

Different people like different things I suppose so it's probably more a case of the car just didn't suit me rather than it being a bad car. The reason i'd keep it over the 206 is that i don;t remember ever reading a decent review of a 206gti 180. In fact I seem to remember only ever reading how the car looked so good on paper but was the opposite in reality. I can't imagine time has done it any favours.

I remember a decent review by Car magazine, they tested it directly against the Civic type R, it was favourable for real world use uin the UK, whereas the CTR obviously shone when they stuck it on pan flat smooth tarmac, a welsh mountain road soon found the pug shining brighter.

civic is larger and heavier, the golf even more so, don't forget the 206 isn't that big, a 205 bonnet for example fits better in the back of a 205 than it does a 206!

I'm in 2 minds....

As much as I love the golf, a change may be needed!

Maybe just not for that...

Cheers peoples!

Go and take a look at it and drive it back to back against the Golf and see what you think, which you prefer, and whether the condition/mileage/value etc of the two cars makes a straight swap plausable.
