So I Missed Pugfest...

Recommended Posts

A bit of a nothing thread, but hell I don't really post much on here anymore. So 2 weeks ago I missed pug fest for the first time that I’ve actually had a working 205 GTI. Reason being, I was getting married on the Saturday.

So the story being that 3 weeks prior to pug fest/wedding weekend I had the crazy idea of dragging out a lovely little non runner and road legal White Phase 2 1.6 GTi off my brothers drive way that I bought last winter. At the time I had no idea what to do with the car, no space, but bought it because it was local, a good price and had really good body work. The previous owner was close to scrapping the car due to it sitting at a garage for 12 months untouched.

So with the car dragged back to the garage a list was made with the intentions of making the car fully road legal within 3 weeks and becoming a surprise grooms wedding car (I had already organised a 1930's Roller for her).

Well the list consisted of a unknown engine, but was reassured it was a "good runner", leaking water pump, heater matrix that had being bypassed, rotten exhaust, seized rear beam, etc. As always the list grows every time you seem to look at the car!

So with the above replaced to make the car run, one afternoon into long evening the rear beam was removed, rebuilt and fitted. A cheeky little spin revealed a good solid engine and gearbox. Very encouraging!

Next the attention was turned to the appearance. I personally hate 1.6 wheels. Mainly because 1.9 wheels look so much better. So with the excuse the tyres being shagged. A wanted post was listed, and tesstuff came up trumps that had a set of refurbished rims with a very light metallic grey paint finish and road legal tyres. A Deal was done, and the nice guy even chucked in a free current Retro cars mag which I will be listing on eBay if anyone wants to buy it? :).

Once back home the paint work was mopped and polished, trim dyed, new number plates, driving lamps etc and the car was looking very attractive. At this point, every time I worked on the car I would get really positive comments from neighbours which again were encouraging.

MOT day arrived 8 days before the wedding and the mot man failed it on headlight adjustment! So after fixing the car in the garage car park, I then had a road legal 205 GTI!!!

Morning of the wedding, my £2 eBay ribbons were attached to the car and I rocked up to the church in the 205 without the Mrs knowing my intentions. When she arrived at the altar, her words were "what the bloody hell is that car doing outside". Mission accomplished ;).

So my plans now? Undecided, tempted to drop a Mi16 lump in, but also tempted to scratch an itch for a Jag XJR. Who knows?

Has anyone else had a 205 GTi / CTI as a wedding car?

Al

Looks great! :)

I used my 205 as a wedding car, there is a pic on a previous thread.

That was August last year, I will be using it as my just divorced car this year! Hahahahaha!

I used my white cti and my dads white cti as wedding cars for my wedding a year ago today funnily enough. On a post somewhere I will see if I can find it. Fair play to you because mine were all ready to go!
