Dimma 205, Cool Or Not?

Recommended Posts

Going to have a look at one possibly but just wondering what the general consensus is on them? Thanks.

I think so, this one was rather lovely at Pugfest. There was also a blue dimma that looked excellent.

My biggest concern would be hidden rust. Somebody posted pics of a Dimma kit being removed a few years back and the car was like a sieve underneath.

Yep - very cool B) Even more so if it's a genuine factory one :D

Sadly some haven't aged very well - I think the rear arches were a major water trap & most that have had rebuilds have normally found a fair bit of work required in those areas to deal with rust - the Renault 5 GT Turbo ones with the same kits certainly suffered.

Regardless of that though - buy it - even if it needs work - buy it :D

Richie that black one looks very nice indeed! I am buying it minus an engine and few other bits, it will need some work by the sound of things, going to look at it tomorrow hopefully. I do like them think they are cool, but for a while I thought they were a bit naff.

I thought they were cool when I was like 5, If the engine was in the rear I would still like them but its not, so its all a load of extra weight with useless extra wide rear wheels... and not forgetting the "almost" side vents

my opinion of course!

205 Maxi style is more preferable imo if taking the body tat route

Im bias but that's because I own a factory dimma which is being restored I would have doubts with one that I could not see under the kit for the rust. I removed my kit which exposed rotted sill and some rust on the rear arches but I love them and still think they have aged well.

They are cool but I don't think that I could drive one without feeling a bit Barry Boy like.

All show and no go I'm afraid.

That's just plain wrong......

I didn't used to be much a fan of them, but they've definitely grown on me a lot in recent years. I find the thing with them is that they are very easy to get wrong and end up looking crap, because by their very nature they are brash and OTT looking, so naff ones stick out like a sore thumb. Good ones look really good and don't look so conspicuous. A perfect example is my current favourite Dimma, as seen below....

So for me it's dark colours, period features and retro coolness, and an OE understated look. White, stickered up, T16-mock-me-ups or other Barry Boy stylings are yuck.

Oh, and "All show and no go"? Well that depends what you've got under the bonnet doesn't it?

A little bit! Plastic clip snapped on the clutch cable. Rather heavy clutch on it doesn help. Rac man put a temp metal on which got me home using the clutch as little as possible! Broken again now of course, new one on order.

they've grown on me, i would definitely own or build one, despite the slightly softening that comes with the super wide rear track!

That black one is my favorite.

The 309's look fantastic, but the "vents" in the 205's just annoy me. The maxi kit is much tidier.

I can just about live with a well-done 205 Dimma like the black one, but it's in large part because it is just an echo of the utterly gorgeous T16 - but it's still very "wannabe", so you might as well go all for it with white'n'stripes (or metallic grey). I'd far rather have the subtlety of a standard-looking GTi. Or a real T16. Yeh, I could go for a real T16, happily. Actually, sod that. Make it a BX4TC, and we're cooking on gas. Mmm.

Sorry, I digress. As for that 309. No. Just... no.

I like them in understated colours. Weird metallic jobs and bright coloured ones remind me of that r5 turbo that Ali G went about in.
