Suede Steering Wheel

Recommended Posts

Anthony

Not used the company in question, but have the wheel in question.

Quality wise it's fine and it's broadly similar size to the standard wheel, but beware that one you factor in the depth of the boss (and quick release if you get one) then the wheel will be much much closer to you than the original. I personally find that uncomfortable (although the owners of said cars loved them) and there's no way that you can reach the light and wiper stalks without basically taking your hand off the wheel - no an issue for hill climbing, but again, it irritated me on the road.

There are a lot of OMP fakes around, so I'd be cautious of that company personally.

I have the same wheel but also from another company. I have cut my boss down to save 90mm which makes it the simler to standard.

That seems to cheap to be real, it's over half the price

Yep as said above - although you'll know for sure if it's a fake one when it arrives in packaging direct from China ;)

If you want genuine OMP stuff you're usually best going to one of the main UK official importers / dealers like KAM Racing or YB Racing or one of the resellers like DT, JJC, etc :)

ETA - Just checked the business name / address - has a UK registered "Office" which is listed solely for "returns" but the actual business is run out of Malaysia.

So good likelihood of getting a fake for that price then, albeit a fairly accurate representation where most wouldn't realise the difference, up until the point you have a problem :(

Last time I saw a Chinese replica OMP product was about 4 months ago on the RSOC - someone bought one of the OMP steering wheel & boss kits from an overseas seller - looked just like the real thing, well up until the point where the metal fatigued & cracked around the 6 point allen key fittings & the steering wheel came off while going round a corner :(

depends how big your hands are ;) and also your leg length to arm/torso ratio as well, and how laid back you like your seat, it's all personal preference really.

have you tried gloved instead of changing the wheel?

I need to wear gloves to run. Still the risk of slipping. For peace of mind I would prefer to change the wheel :)

Out if interest, what wheels have people got? What do you think of the build quality, etc?

i've got an omp dished wheel, as like you i found it very hard to grip the standard one on trackdays. personally i like the dished ones but does take a little while to get used to.

I've got one of the corsica style ones, build quality is a little better than I expected for the £30 I payed, most annoying thing about it is the black dye on the suede comes off on my hands, despite it being two years old now. The suede was getting a bit flat and shiney in places and was getting slippery, but I got a suede brush and gave it a going over and its back to normal again
