Strut Top Strengthening Plates

Recommended Posts

starky5

I've got some nice rusty holes in the top of my suspension strut and im thinking that the strengthening plates might solve my problem. The plan is to cut out the tops and set the strengthening plates in flush.

What I could do with is a cardboard cut out of these so i can see if they are big enough to allow me to cut all the rust out. Or if anyone could send me a scale drawing that i could print and cut out that would be brilliant.

Thanks for any help

I fitted some strut top re-enforcing plates to my old STDT because of the rust that was starting to come through on on side.

I treated the rust first & then welded the plates in, there is usually plenty of extra material for the plates to be trimmed down to the original strut top dimension but I'd personally leave the old metal in place so you can clamp the plate to the original strut pick up points & tack in place.

I've got a picture of the plates fitted how I did them but on a different hard drive / pc, I'll look for it tomorrow & add it on.

I trimmed them down before welding them in place to give a nicer finish, I've seen some that looked like they were held on with chewing gum.

I later filled the gaps & smoothed them in better.

They look like they should cover the hole! On the passenger side how far did they go out towards the wing? The holes I have are on that out side edge not far away from where it curves down. I may well end up mounting them on top I just like the idea of the repair being hiden.

Cheers

Andrew
