Hi lads, new to the site as i need some help with a 205 CTi. I've searched through the forum for about a week now for answers but cant fine a cure, i'm hoping you can help.

 

Not had the car long. It had an intermittent starting problem and when tested it had no spark at the plugs. When it started it would run all day (as long as it wasn't turned off), it pulled well and no misfires. This went on for about a week but now its dead. I've changed the coil and module. The cap and arm are clean and the leads are ok too. I've been through the wiring loom with the Haynes manual and i'm now at a loss. I'm thinking the new coil is faulty. When cranking it over, all 4 wires to the coil are positive, Is this correct? Any help would be great as with this heat wave coming it would be nice to get out in it.

A coil is just a very long wire so if you connect a plus at one end the other end is also plus regardless of what the wire does so you should have a positive on all 4 terminals with ignition on but not running.

 

The dizzy triggers the ignition amp which in turn earths the coil to complete the circuit, the other connector on the earth side is the rev counter wire so you want to be looking at the dizzy

 

particularly the flying lead connection that goes from it to the ignition amp and the amp itself.

 

Seems to be a regular problem this last few months and most times it was a faulty ignition amp.

I second the amp and only a genuine bosch item and also check the brown connector underneath the flow meter.

Its had a new amp, not bosch tho. At the amp i've got a wire there that is earth, 1 positive and 2 to the coil. i'm guessing the other 2 go to the dizzy? I didnt know about them so gotta check that this afternoon. I'll check the flow meter too. cheers

Couple of things to check.

 

Have you a spare tach relay to try? If so it's easy enough to swap over.

 

The two wires from the ignition module to the side of the dizzy should be wrapped in a 3rd shield wire. Mine was a tangle mess of bits of old wires and bad connectors when I bought it.

The generated low voltage A/C signal (from engine cranking over) is pulsed from the dizzy to the ignition amp. You can test the signal output from the dizzy with a multimeter.

I'll try find the instuctions I used.

 

Make sure the dizzy cap king lead plunger (inside dizzy the cap) is still springy, chep replacement dizzy caps have been know to stick in or even fall out.

 

My guess its a poor conection somewhere, more often than not it the cause of the problem on these.

Compared to the CTR promlems I'm having at the moment, the 205 is like a kids toy in comparison!

Dan, the Rallye is tucked away in a nice clean garage now not in the dirt at the farm. not seen it for about 3 months, hope it's still there.lol. any help with this would be great if your passing. it does have an immobilizer but I've checked it and it is working as it's suppose to.

 

Mei, Its a red L reg, came up from Swansea way.

 

Alex, yeah I've taken the dizzy off and it is working as it should. with the pulse test and the 3rd lead is in good condition.

Its running! I had some time to spend with the car so decided to put it all back together, all i did different to previous attempts was to remove the dizzy, clean the end where the rotor arm fits on (it was clean but just in case, i did it anyway). Re-secured the wires to the dizzy also after a clean re-fitted it, connected up all the multi-plugs, And it fired up! I've swapped the new coil and module with the old ones and it still starts and runs fine. The fault must have been in the dizzy somewhere but where, I have no idea.
