Cutting Out (Fuel Starvation)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have a 150bhp tu5 16v (cammed etc) in my 205. On track below half a tank I am getting fuel surge, I can live with that. However it has been getting progressively worse, even on hills on motorways the car is cutting right out as if there is fuel surge.

I can understand on track it's going to happen, however on the motorway without corners?!

Also it intermittently has a rough idle ( could be any number of things)..

I have went ahead and ordered an updated in tank pump from glencoe, as I am convinced that the issue is fuel pressure related.

The only other relevant fact is that sometimes the pump primes for minutes, and sometimes just a second.

What's people's thoughts on problems like this? It has a bosch phase 2 gti pump, definitely quite old at that.

Cheers

Josh

i had similar problems in my 205 turned out the filter had come off the pump and was loose in the tank, causing the mesh at the bottom of the pump to be caked with dirt blocking fuel flow. only a 5 minute job as long as the screws have not seized maybe worth a look?

As above, I would remove the pump from the tank and have a good look at it - many now have very perished hoses for example, and as above, the pickup can get damaged/clogged

Funny this should be mentioned! When I first started finding the problem I took the pump off, and sure enough it had dropped down a little, so I just pushed it back on, but it still continued to do it.. Uprated fuel pump to go in this week to rule out the cause being low pressure.

Cheers

Josh
