Well That Was Long Lived.....

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

Taxed the car today went out for a nice drive, all was well....

Gave it some pedal on the dual carriageway near my house, hear a noise follwed by a tapping noise.

I pulled over and lifted the bonnet and found half the aux belt missing.

Tried to nurse it home but the belt totally came off the pulley and shredded itself round the bottom pulley.

Now wont turn over and I had to get a tow home, luckily I was just down the road from home.

Need to figure out why the belt slipped of the pulley and find a replacement. bearing in mind I haven't got a clue where it came from. The only saving grace was half the belt was still intact so I can get one the same size.

Gggrrr

just hope some of the debris hasn't found it's way under the cambelt and made it jump a few teeth.

Look on the bright side, it could have been much worse.

I borrowed a friends Mk1 Clio 16v a few years back and the aux belt snapped suddenly whilst driving, firing itself through the cambelt cover, wrapping itself and bits of plastic around and uniformly bending all 16 valves.

I'd only got 5 miles up the road

You know I've got a really bad feeling that it could well have got under the cover and done just that.

There was a metallic clonking sound just before I turned it off I thought it was the remains of the belt flapping about.

I'm at work now so will see tomorrow. If its bent some valves that's it for me I'm afraid. Supprisingly I'm not too fussed ????

Should it still turn over without the belt?

yup, so the first thing I;d be doing is taking the cover off and timing it up, if it wont turn DO NOT force it.

If the engine was still running on four when you switched it off, you should be OK. Normally it'll be all over in moments if it was going to be.

Remove the remains of the shredded belt and double check the cam timing and belt tension - assuming all is OK, check it will rotate by hand and then start it.

It will turn and run fine without the belt, atleast until the battery discharges (no alternator to keep it charged)

As Mei says though - if it won't turn, find out why and don't just apply more force! If it's anything like when I did it to my friends Clio, bits of shredded belt will be everywhere and wrapped very tightly around various spinny bits!

It's fooked.

Removed the pulley and covers and found most of the belt under the crank sprocket ????

The tensioner was pulled loose and the exhaust pulley hole was after the timing hole and the inlet one was before it.

Not looking good so I pulled the inlet and already can see all 8 inlet valves are bent.

I'm just taking the head off but I'm pretty much done with it.

When you say pretty much done with it - you mean bin teh engine and stick in anotehr, or the whole car?

Getting another engine in there will be easy enough.

Tuck it up for now and tackle it when you feel like it.

Time to walk away for a bit. I've had times where I just need to leave the f***ing thing then come back with a clear head.

i mean im done with the car, ive got spare valves here to fix it so might just leave it a while and do that then sell it on.

there is very minimal damage to the pistons so they wont need replacing, the seats look ok just the where two exhaust valves have snapped there is some slight damage around the seat but nothing major.

really the only thing I need to buy is a new aux belt and the rest is time and effort. neither of which I have for this car anymore.

does anyone know if I can cancel my pugfest tickets for a refund? if not anyone know someone that want two with camping?

anyway for your viewing pleasure:

Chin up buddy and show the fecker who is boss. I'll get you a beer at Pugfest, all the work will be worth it, don't let it grind you down, you are nearly there.

Who local to Pete can go give him a chuck to get this up and running again? If I were closer I'd offer you a hand.

If you have most of the bits just get it done, it won't take long if you get your head down. Seam's madness to do all that work then just give up.

I feel your pain, check my engine thread if you aren't aware. it's not all that much money to fix, perhaps a skim, check the guides, then check the valves and get a load of new ones. fifteen quid for new head bolts and same again for a new belt, plus aux belt. or buy a known good head for fifty, they come up pre skimmed from time to time!

plus there are some really lovely people on this forum that give up their time to help, like tom offering the beer. I know how you feel, and was thinking similar things, but keep in mind the plan you had prior to this, and think of this as a little diversion, perhaps a fat camshaft might help.

Yeah, I had stored my car for about 3 years without having the time to work on it. Needed a car for work, gave it to a mechanic who welded it up, got it sprayed and repaired it mechanically too. £3000 and 6 months later I had a car. It was loud (Horrid exhaust) and running like a dog (bad electrics), but I've moaned to my dad over skype (I'm a student on placement) and he told me to roll my sleeves up and tick the jobs off one by one and a month down the line I'd be wondering why I'd got so upset and thought I'd made a mistake with this car. The car is still far from perfect, but after all the hassle I've had I'm glad I didn't get a quick sale and get something newer and more reliable.

You'll look back on this and laugh. We're here for you and I'm sure loads of people will be ready to welcome you with open arms at Pugfest, when you turn up with the car. Good things in life don't come easy, this just means you have to fight harder to get to the finish, but don't give up at the last hurdle fella, not when we're all there cheering you on! :)

Sorry to hear about the engine Pete, I was looking forward to seeing you driving around the area.

Tuck it away for now and keep an eye out for the bits you need, in a few months time the bug might come back and bite you. I am real busy at work at the moment but in a few months time when it quietens down if you want a hand give me a shout and we can arrange some time for me to come round and help out.

You have put so much into the car and the pics looked so good don't let this stop you finally enjoying it.

Cheers,

Darren
