Major Differences Between Front Brakes On 1.4, 1.6 Cti And 1.9 Cti

Recommended Posts

Spice Boy

Good afternoon chaps,

I have been searching for definitive answers on this and have joined this site to seek expert help!

I have come from a German (BMW) background so I basically know nothing about the 205 but I have been given a 1.4 convertible which needs brakes and an exhaust before she sees an MOT station...

Now, I have found that there are critical differences on the rear brakes (the lack of discs etc was a clue lol) but when pricing up front discs and pads I have seen that some discs are quoted for ALL models of 205 and some are model specific.. WTF? A disc is either generic for all models or model specific lol..

So basically, after my long winded intro and rant, I am asking if there are master cylinder, caliper, disc or pad differences between the 1.4 and both 1.6/1.9 CTi models...?

Thanks :D

The 1.4 use's solid disc's, 1.6 and 1.9 have Vented ones with Bendix Callipers unless fitted with ABS, Base models are dead easy to upgrade to vented just by bolting on a 1.9 or most 306, Xsara callipers etc

Thank you for that... Nice, simple and informative! :D

Nice to know that parts from other french cars/manufacturers will bolt straight on too!

I would assume if I were to fit 2.0 306 calipers for example, and assuming all Pug/Citroen cars are 4 stud to simplify finding discs, I would need to find the matching discs and pads? Also, would the master cylinder require changing?

Discs and pads of course, MS, try it and see, some are OK and others not, Mind I've never had a problem

Brill, thanks for that :)

I will be ordering a set of 306 GTi6 Calipers if that is the case, seeing as they need replacing anyway may aswell upgrade at the same time :)

Will they just bolt up or would I need new hubs etc too?

they'll go straight on a base model hub with the appropriate hoses and a 15" + wheel.

Awesome, thanks!! :D

I never imagined having a 205 as I am usually German through and through but this car was too good to pass up! Been standing for 4+ years though so needs a fair bit replacing lol..

GTi-6 brakes will be massively overkill for a 1.4 CJ, and there is a fair unsprung weight penalty associated with large brakes like that.

Personally, I'd stick with a 247mm vented disk and just run 1.9 GTi calipers - works very well, standard hoses will be fine, not overally heavy, and both the brakes and the disks/pads are cheap as chips. That's all I run on both my GTi's and they're more than upto the job for road use and light trackday use with a good quality standard pad such as Ferodo Premiers (more serious trackday use needs some uprated pads, but the basic brakes are fine)
