Tensioner Whine? And Low Oil Pressure. Vid Inside

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

before I start id like to mention it was quite hot here today (around 27 maybe higher, but felt a lot more.) so this might be the reason for the oil temp and low pressure?

but I do seem to have developed a whine coming form under the cambelt cover, it does rise and fall with revs but mostly under acceleration (off throttle at higher speeds is ok)

now the tensioner was not new but was not very old (was from my 306 cab xu7 engine) and was not noisy in my cab.

im just wondering if I've maybe tightened it a little too much? doesn't really do it at idle though?

here's a little vid for you to hear what I mean, its a high pitched squeal.

heres a pic of my dash at idle, note the low oil pressure (I know you should really take this with a pinch of salt on these senders) and my oil temperature.

water temp was pretty hot too.

oil and coolant look fine, that should be around where the fans kick in.

are you using the 205 pressure sender and where does it sit on cold start?

got plenty of pressure on startup it sits on the 4th bar and im using the mushroom sender yes.

fan is on a manual switch at the mo as like I said in my other thread the ecu is for some reason not controlling it. I need to get round to wiring up the fan switch to do it automatically.

tbh im more worried about the whine at the moment, sounds horrible.

see what I mean about this poxy car

you built the ruddy thing :P:ph34r:

does sound a bit tight, but if the tensioner is unknown I'd certainly replace the kit.

what oil are you running?

yeah yeah I know. I didn't actually check the tension I just lined up the arrow between the two tabs and went with that.

pretty sure its cheapo oil at the mo as I wasn't prepared to waste £40 for it to mayo up again.

was planning on running it in then changing it for some quality oil.

I cant remember the viscosity of it though?

wheres the best place other than pug to get a kit? im gonna slacken it off tomorrow and see before I go buy one anyway.

at least ive lifted the rear end up now so one less thing to worry about. looked and both the bumstop cups are still there, well part of them anyway ...

gsf do dayco and INA timing kits pretty cheaply, IIRC the manual 136 tooth for a gti6 is around £50.

don't think I've paid more than £20 for oil ever  local motorfactors do Comma oils, never had problem with their standard ones.

I got 20l of Total classic 10W40 two years ago from a dealer for £33.

That include the belts I assume? That's not bad

Last time I put quality oil in was castrol at £34 for 5 ltrs.

I normally use carlube for my everyday car

I've just seen Ecp have helix hx7 for £20 for 5 ltrs
