Last Time I Drove My Car

Recommended Posts

NOsMAN

Can't remember the last time I drove my 205 gti.

Over the last 5 years I've not driven the car at all, due to family commitments, studying for degree, raising a young family and a career change. Just been wondering when the hell i will get the chance again to enjoy the car. Spent so much for no enjoyment:(

Just wondering who else is in the same boat?

Very similar boat. Driven mine for two weeks in eight years. Ok I did have a 1.6 for a couple of years as well to begin with, but other than that been stuck with driving Discos as need a workhorse/towing vehicle/family car. Also my wifes income dropped by over half about five years ago, so have very little disposable income. On the plus side the dust is protecting the paintwork lol!

I think it's not that uncommon. I'm in the same shoes - bought it, restored it, spent great deal of resources and did 137 km in last 3 years. There's family, job, flat renovation and only 24 hrs in a day...

I think the only reason I use mine so much is that I dont have another option! I'm sure if i had a second car, the jobs that need doing on the 205 would get pushed back and it'd end up on axle stands on the drive!

With it being my only car, if I dont fix the issues with it promptly, I have no transport and will end up with no job!

Mine also gets used as a workhorse/towing vehicle when I need it to.

I know it can take a long time for people to do complete overhauls, but I'm sure people could enjoy their cars more if they overhaul them in 'modules' and leave them roadworthy in between?

Summer 2010.

Got shoved in the garage once the 306 got MOT'd and it's been there ever since. A rebuild has been on the cards for the past 24 months, but like you my time is sapped by shift work & associated courses, being a seperated Father & devoting 99% of my spare time to my son and finally, general DIY on the house (Fence/Bath/Kitchen/Ceiling/Re-pointing mortar). No chance over the next month or so either due to a holiday and work joly.

I do have plans, something along the lines of 'ClubSport' style (after reading a project thread on here) but whenever it looks like I can get time on it, something else crops up. If anything, it's my lads interest in the 205 (He calls it 'Georgy') that keeps me going.

Doesn't help I need to clear my garage out first!

Selling mine now is like selling 4 grand of cash for 2 grand, and still someone would want to bargain... So, it stays with me.

OK not 205, but I bought my 1951 Riley RMB in 1974, drove it for 8 months and 1200 miles in 1975, then took it off the road to replace the perfectly good but wrong pattern material roof covering for the correct type. Thought it would take about 3 weeks. Well, it's been a long 3 weeks. This was a perfectly good driving car, MoT'd and all. Just been too busy, plus restoring the ash frame and bodywork generally not my forte, doesn't interest me like working on the mechanics does. Eventually bit the bullet in 2008 and professional restoration (that I can't afford and will have cost as least twice as much as the car will be worth) should be completed later this year.

But the point is...I can still remember some of those drives in 1975!

Well I've been doing the same albeit not with the 205. Instead my poor old Mk1 Focus RS has sat unloved in the garage on SORN since late October 2010 after I parked it up :(

TBH I've been enjoying the Pug so much that I kind of just put the FRS on the back burner, but hopefully will get the love back for it next year :)

great, keep them then gents but for god sake put a bit of effort in and a bit of cash and get them back on the street instead of moaning about how hard it is to do anything with em. they dont have to be perfect, far from it. i'd dare bet a couple of hundred quid and just a few weekends would see them back on the road where they belong.

come on lads, lets have a big push and get them back doing some miles :):D

Picked mine up end of April with the intention of it being a rolling restoration through the summer. It was a perfectly working tax'd and Mot'd car that took me the 320 miles home from collection without so much as a puff of smoke.

Got a bit carried away with the search for the source of leaks and I now have half a 205 on axle stands in the garage with half the underside stripped to bare metal. Maybe i'm odd but i get as much enjoyment out of working on it as my first ever restoration as i do driving anything.

Thankfully it's not my only source of transport. I'm not working on it very quickly. i'm using the method of every time I'm near the garage remove a nut/scrape and inch of rust in the belief that this will see the car restore itself. When it ever gets finished it will get used as unlike every other hobby car I've had this one actually has enough seats for the whole family.
