Ouch, Think Its A Little Low On The Back

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

Put some petrol in today and gave it a quick run around the block.

Hit a massive dip in the road and heard a huge crunch followed by a rubbing noise.

Stopped and found this:

Now I need to raise the back a tad, change the tyres for some smaller ones and repair the bloody arch. Not good

I guess your bumpstops are tired/missing? or you have tractor tyres...

Both stops are missing yeah and I have 205 section tyres on the back. Not good.

Didn't really think about the stops tbh.

Ill replace them too, if I can get the buggered bolts out that is

You really need to replace the bumpstops as Mei says, otherwise this will keep happening unless you massively raise the rear.

Getting the old bolts out can be fun if the bumpstops have been missing for some time as you'll typically have little more than a barely recognisable blob of rust. Something like Irwin bolt/nut extractors will work if it's not too far gone, otherwise you'll need to drill it out and retap (M8 x 1.25 thread)... and that's going to mean beam off (or atleast removing the trailing arm).

Needless to say, use a healthy smear of copperslip on the new bolt when refitting and periodically check the condition of the bump stops to prevent a reoccurance.

Good luck getting it sorted and hope fixing the arch isn't too problemsome - bit of a kick in the spuds to happen so soon after spending such time and effort getting it painted and back on the road, but that's the joy of old tin cans sometimes.

Repairing the arch won't be too much of a problem and I've got some paint left over to touch it up.

It's mostly the poxy expense of it at the mo as I'm right up against it due to the imminent trip to the USA in August .and bumpstops ain't exactly cheap are they?

If it comes to it ill just weld the poxy thing on ha ha .

Still it does drive really nice ???? and it's pretty rapid to boot.

I'm currently looking at some different options like mini ones @ £6 a pair for poly ones.

Ill make a mount, job done.

Anyone know the std dimensions of a 205 item?

I love making harder work for myself ....

ha ha , as much as I appreciate he guesture i'll pass thanks.

im no pauper. I just don't really want to throw anymore money at this poxy car. money is tight for sure but only cos ive just spent £8k on a holiday.

plus I know i'll have to drop the beam again (which I cant really be arsed) to drill out the bolts as they are pretty fubared.

you don't have to drop the beam, get a 90 degree head drill in there.

Offers there and as Welshpug says can be down in place.

Can you afford to be fixing the bodywork often though ?

im sure it will all be much clearer in the morning, half a bottle of vodka don't sit well with decision making :D

it just seems never ending if you know what I mean?

add two new tyres+ bumpstops+ 90 deg drill and time and hasstle = had about enough

Whack it in the garage, go enjoy your holiday then you'll come back with fresh enthusiasm for the car to sort it out.

Chin up mate, nearly the exact same thing happened as soon as I got my resto on the road, the beam was too low, creased the wheel arch- and as it turned out the "freshly rebuilt" beam was fubared! Unfortunately crap happens, but take a break and then get yourself some bumpstops, like others have said, even ones from a scrappy would be fine, but dont spoil the car when you are this close to the end :)
